Default #Occupy Vacant Houses - Oakland

The Oakland General Assembly has called people to occupy houses made vacant by foreclosures.

Is this a better outlook for the winter months than tents ?

Well its certainly a bold move but what are the consequences? They risk being seen as leeches I fear if news networks like Fox get holds of them and turns the story upside down on its head. One thing they need is a slick PR campaign to get the media on their side which in turn gets people on their side.

Brilliant. Anything that causes logistical headaches for the police is just great. Diffuse the Occupy campaign across a wide area and just use the central assembly area for daytime and nightime rosters.

    Like it. Smart.

My concern is that the vacants would be occupied by middle-class protesters, to make a point.
They should, of course, be occupied by homeless people.
Which would also make a point.

It would be great to have something like Chrisitania in Denmark! The self sufficient place where squatters, hippies all sorts of interesting types hang out. Its a model we could look at (minus the social issues obviously!)

I'd say there's enough to go around given economic conditions.

The Oakland general strike is on. Has anyone heard much about it?

    http://rt.com/usa/news/oakland-general-strike-city-425/

This says that the Mayor has allowed public servants to strike. It sounds like she's afraid.

The twitter just mentioned that a 5,000 person march is heading down X street. If this is successful, it will be a great deterrent to any city thinking of teargassing theirs out.

One of the funny things about "Occupy" is that homeless people and protesters are getting to know each other.

And of course homeless people may well have been middle class last year.

The Occupy Dublin lads have been sharing their food and materials with the homeless in Dublin. Was chatting to some earlier on this afternoon for a bit on the way home from work and its a community effort

Careful what you wish for! Baltimore has 16,000 vacant houses like these.

Looks like #occuyoakland protest at the port tonight. Reports on twitter that a protester has been hit by a car and injured.

The Port itself was closed down yesterday and while the unions couldn't for legal reasons join the general strike called for the day many of the union workers took a day off and joined the Occupy protestors.

The Mayor and the police are staying well back out of it and are definitely rattled.

I noticed that Angela Davis was there to kick off the day.

Nice to see some of the old war horses come out of their stables

After the mess they made of attacking a protestor with the tear gas canister they have painted themselves in a bad light. Any further threats or voilence from the police force just reinforces how inept at they are at doing their job.

Great live updates. Someone already injured according to the Guardian...

Edit: Cops acting the arse again, using rubber bullets.

Police are throwing them out and the same is happening in Salt Lake City.

    They have gone peacefully apparently.
