What to do with gluts ? There is a carpet of apples in my garden, even after giving many away and putting some in the freezer.

Should there be a garden produce swap-market ?

So did I, when I clicked on the link. But then I got interested. And it is the same issue - the planet produces a glut of every blooming thing, from free range eggs to ipods.

You've just given the answer. Diversity. At the moment there are guys driving around the place here with literally truckloads of onions. Bags of 5, 10 or 20 kg, 0.15€ per kilo. 4 or 5 different trucks pass by every day. We like our onions, but there are limits...
The good thing is of course that a lot of these end up with the food kitchens, but that's not the point. A smallish community can happily feed itself with a wide variety of stuff, but they have to grow the wide variety.

Local growing conditions do impact on that diversity and the quality of the produce, a primary reason why certain regions of Ireland are know for producing certain produce.
