The proportion of xenophobic sentiments expressed in the comments section is a cause for concern.

Those idiots would be well served finding out a little bit about how their compatriots are treated in some places:

“In Perth bulging Irish wallets are still shunned. Our reputation as wild tenants precedes us. A tension between the Irish who come here to make a life, and those who desire to get the leg over, certainly exists down here.

“Every crass Irish headline solidifies our good-time Charlie stereotype, and it deepens the Australian pool for water cooler racism.

“White and jovial, with a fondness for a drink, we Paddy’s are easy targets.

Has anyone told Charlie Chawke that he's in breach of employment legislation?

One of the country’s best known publicans Charlie Chawke said yesterday that frontline staff serving the public at his pub group "have to be Irish".The owner of the nine-strong pub group said that bar and floor employees at his business “have to be Irish and they show that the céad míle fáilte is still alive and well, thank God”.
“I believe it is essential to have Irish staff behind the bar or on the floor because they have the blas and the personality to get on with customer.
“Irish staff know what is going on in Croke Park or in the rugby or what is happening around the country.”

Big sudden spike in attacks on the Polish community in North Belfast this week marking a 40 percent rise overall geographically [in the North, 6 Counties] on last year.

Calls for action to tackle this...
Quote.Northern Ireland's first and deputy first ministers must take action to stop attacks on the Polish community, one of its representatives has said.
Jerome Mullen, who is NI Honorary Polish Consul, said leadership "must come from the top to have this stamped out once and for all". unquote.

This is so depressing. Any idea which group is responsible? I remember reading coverage in the UK papers a few years ago that largely blamed the Unionists, is that still the case? I was inclined to believe it then as it was the UK press placing the blame....

Elements close to the PUP/UVF were quick to distance themselves. There could be a sectarian rather than racial dimension to this or possibly a dual motivation.

Just shows you how far Belfast has evolved since Bombay Street in 1969.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969_No..._Ireland_riots

No let up in this recent round of racist attacks as a business premises in East Belfast is targeted by arsonists....

Quote.Asta’s Glam Factory, in the Castlereagh Street area, was targeted shortly before midnight on Monday.

It’s believed a group of men forced the shutters up, poured an accelerant inside then set it alight.

The business, understood to be owned by a Polish national, was extensively damaged by the fire and smoke. unquote.

Arrests amid the spate of racist attacks across Belfast with numerous other incidents being reported...

Quote..In one incident a woman was racially abused and had food thrown at her by a group of men and women at a takeaway restaurant.

It happened at about 1am on Wednesday in the Donegall Road area and a 39-year-old man and 37-year-old woman have been arrested.

And in another incident on Wednesday, a 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault and disorderly behaviour after police received a report of a man trying to gain access to a restaurant at Castle Place and being aggressive and racially abusive to staff.

Superintendent Paula Hilman said: “I understand that hate crime has a psychological and emotional effect on victims and the wider communities.

“We need to remove all incidents of hate crime from our streets and ensure that victims have confidence to come forward and report to the Police. unquote. http://www.u.tv/News/2015/04/15/Food...t-attack-35511

Not such a ''wonderful town'' for foreign nationals today. In nearby Lurgan shots have been fired at the home of a Turkish man who's lived here for 40 years and says he bothers no-one. http://www.u.tv/News/2015/04/15/Shot...an-house-35485

A very nasty piece of fascist, ultra right racism, one of the few Old School racists in Ireland, crawled up my front path recently, with an anti-refugee leaflet (found himself v. quickly outside the gate with no invite to return). Some of these people are standing for election in the locals and undoubtedly will get votes. The Brexit backwash, the media, and the lack of active political opposition to racism, are factors, along with all of the social and economic conditions that have underlay the increase of support for racism and the far right across Europe. Who is organising against it ?

There's a few of them around. I doubt if they will get more than a few dozen votes each, at most a few hundred. Incidentally, I see that Justin Barrett, is now cosying up to the strange former journalist Gemma O'Doherty.

Yes they are crawling out from under the woodwork. There is a rainbow alliance of all sorts of racists and xenophobes around. Peter Casey included. He may well be elected. There is a shocking amount of racism prevalent in Ireland. Black Africans in particular come in for a high level of racial abuse and physical attacks. Anti-Traveller venom seems to affect the majority of the population. We are now a country of small businesses, the economists tell us, with weak TU organisation and membership levels, which is a classically fertile ground for ' this kind of thing'.
