I see Helena Sheehan gets herself mentioned again.
Lots of respect for her and she set up the Occupy University and had some great talks in UCD. But did she not aim to try and nip the bad feelings in the bud early? If it was recognisable early on why was nothing done? Or was it?Prof Helena Sheehan of DCU, now in her fifth decade of activism, was involved in the Occupy Dame Street movement in its first three months. She says problems were obvious from the second day.
“There were structural problems between camp and movement. I argued all along it should be a movement for those with jobs, with kids and complicated lives – not just those free to camp.”

Great article on Red Pepper about the occupation of derelict buildings and the effort to build communities. While they were subject to a court ruling the judge had said given his discretion he may have had a different view. Plans in the pipeline for more community centres.

The need for a little bit of attention has flared up again for the poor old Occupy lot.

Sure it keeps them off the streets.![]()
Why did they do that? There is a big evolution needed in the ODS movement . When I was at the Unlock NAMA meeting a couple of months back a few of their members were there and didnt appear to add anything constructive from what I can see. Why are they not occupying the old NAMA buildings across Dublin and the country?...

There was too many sheeple in that movement, it was obvious that attending a meeting there was numerous people although idealistic they were none the wiser as regards the ideas that were proposed. We are the 99% and then what? Throw a leaderless movement with great potential and a group of sheeple and we get out of steam tres quick. It would have been handier if they had advocated solutions but alas nothing came in from that. The people whom gave guidance certainly were intelligent and most of the people who got involved were but I looked in from the sidelines at some of the shouty types.

Farfetched. Who would possibly be paying them to protest? If you have some evidence of this please don't be shy in sharing it with us.
I suspect that your problem really is that their "solutions" are not your "solutions." So you choose to abuse them. That could be looked upon as a personal flaw by someone more critical than myself.![]()

The same crew were always at the same centre of everything ODS do while others seem first drawn by their ideals and then fall off when they realise the movement lacks any real bite. There was afew at the Unlock NAMA meeting a couple of months back, same people with the same inane comments....

If people seem to do nothing but participate in every protest that's on offer it's not unreasonable to think that that's their sole occupation. As for who's paying them - They may be independently wealthy or there may be some philanthropic organisation devoted to the support of indigent imbeciles but if I had to guess I'd say it's that super-mug known as the taxpayer who picks up the tab.
The thing is they had no solutions. They were strictly a 'Down with this sort of thing' outfit. Have a look back on this thread and you'll see that I made numerous attempts to find out what they were about and all I got for my pains was childish name calling.
Oh God I hope not. The Director of Consumer Affairs has me on a warning that I'm close to a monopoly there and action will be taken if I pick up any more.
By your logic if someone is on the dole and spends their days painting pictures they are by definition a professional artist. Or if they spend their days backing horses in the bookies they are a professional gambler even if they never win anything. Or if they have a nice garden and spend their time happily tending to it they are a professional gardener. Etc.

I'm opposed to the Alice in Wonderland approach to language.
Protesting is not generally looked upon with disfavour. Most people would look on it as an important civil activity. For this reason it is a protected right in constitutions around the world. Accordingly your use of the word professional in the sense of the above definition is ridiculous really. You may, for example, disapprove of your neighbour and his mates who are all on the dole kicking a football around the park all day ... but you would hardly refer to them as professional footballers to disparage them. It would be senseless. People would not get it. Who is paying them? they would ask with a puzzled look on their faces.

Ah but I wasn't speaking about protest generally, I was referring to the gobsh!tes who take part in every protest, not on principle but to meet some need within themselves.
Not the people in my circle. We're a clever lot us Buffaloes.![]()
