Adjusting to life back in this blighted isle and I have the colourful irrelevancy of a Presidential election to occupy my thoughts. Gallagher and Davis are deeply-compromised FF hacks so that sort of grotesque background basically invalidates them as candidates as far as I am concerned. Mitchell is an inert time-server who criticised the former German ambassador for telling some uncomfortable truths. Dana is an irritant who represents a rapidly dwindling strand of opinion. Norris is shrill and lacks judgement. Michael D. is a decent man and would be not the worst choice. But is he the best? Martin McGuinness may benefit from the increasingly hysteric attacks on him by Fine Gael.It is not as if we don't know McGuinness. He is the best known candidate of the lot of them, inside and outside Ireland. And the attacks on him, while expected, are likely to backfire if that is all FG have in the last 10 days of the campaign.

Also, if you think the commander-in-chief of the armed forces should have a military background, there really is only one candidate to vote for.

Anybody hear Gay and Marty on Dunphy yesterday?
    Oh, dear.
Gay: "Martin's propaganda", "You can see the lights of CIE from the Aras" "Eamon, you are a bad chairman", "I'm telling the broadcast authority/your ma/ the teacher that you like Martin more than me".

Martin: "Ian Paisley, Peter Robinson, Ian Paisley, Peter Robins.............." "Good Friday/St. Andrews"

    It was hilarious:

Davis posters join Higgins, McGuinness and Mitchell in Portlaoise now. Two types, the 18 year old head and shoulders and a catwalk shot of her walking in a tight frock.

Plus anyone with Guinness in their name is clearly a natural ambassador for Ireland.
