    Default Charlie Haughey's Ireland

There are some fascinating clips on youtube from a documentary which was apparently made in the late eighties featuring Charlie and his relationship with Ireland and the Irish.
I'm not sure whether is was commissioned and funded by RTE or if was actually shown on RTE at the tine so any further info appreciated.

Made by independent company Pipeline, Charles Haughey's Ireland was broadcast on Channel 4 in 1986. It was produced and directed by Michele Kurland – currently Head of Factual Entertainment at talkbackTHAMES where she oversees The Apprentice among others. Haughey to Sugar? Yes there's a certain continuity there. Programme Consultant was Anthony Cronin who numbered among the typical Haughey sleeveens such as Ballagh and Guerin. Cronin's quid peo quo? He was a founding member of Amadána and became its saoi ("wise one", no really, that's what they call themselves, honest).

All six parts of the programme can be seen here (audio out of synch). It clearly illustrates how absolutely nothing has changed in Ireland for the ruling élite – but we wouldn't have it any other way now, would we?

There's also this gem of media onanism. Yuk!

I have a vague memory of the Haughey show.
One of the many problems with Haughey, was that he actually believed it was his Ireland.

John Waters seems to have always had silly hair.

    From the Sunday World:

"There was controversy in 1992 when, as Minister for Finance, Bertie appointed his wife's and Sarah's brother to a plum State job. Ronan Kelly, who was then 49, was appointed as appeals commissioner by his brother-in-law. Kelly was a well qualified chartered accountant but his appointment was criticised by the opposition".

Always thought Charlie dodged the Rev demand by making an Appeal to Bertie's bro-in-law.

Inside the grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre, unprecedented events of 1982 - THE GUBU DIARY -

THE GUBU DIARY: It was the time of Charles Haughey, phone-tapping, Malcolm Macarthur and political scandal. Jim Kirby, a Department of Justice civil servant, kept a diary during these momentous events. Now, 30 years on, he shares his unique insights into the scandals

GUBU WAS THE ACRONYM coined by the late Conor Cruise O’Brien from Charles Haughey’s own words – grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre, unprecedented – to describe Haughey’s scandal-prone government in 1982 and his general style of leadership.
Haughey used the adjectives about the most shocking of the events of 30 years ago: the arrest of a murderer, Malcolm Macarthur, in the Dalkey apartment of his attorney general, Patrick Connolly.

And there were numerous other incidents: the so-called Dowra affair, when a case against the minister for justice’s garda brother-in-law, Thomas Nangle, was dropped after the RUC arrested the main witness at the request of the Garda Siochána; the tapping of two journalists’ phones to discover their sources; the attempt to have a local sergeant, Tom Tully, moved because he raided a pub in the minister’s constituency; and much more.

I remember this dross first time around and it was clear to me that a sociopath had taken over the largest party in the country at the time.

There were hints of meglomania all over this "documentary" and after the GUBU regime of 1982, the omens were bad. 1982 displayed Haughey in power as a weak, corrupt, feeble, ineffectual leader not in control of his Cabinet and hopelessly compromised. Leadership challenges were regular and his party was split in two.

What was truly worrying about 1982 was that Haughey was prepared to use corruption as an instrument of public administration and that became part and parcel of the Fianna Fail way of doing things.

We are paying an awful price for that now.

Well it says a lot about people here that even after all about Charlie became clear they all voted Bertie back in time and again.

Ryle Dwyer piece on the 30th anniversary of McCreevy's no confidence motion in Haughey in today's Examiner.

The use of the prudish American euphemism 'ass' jars a bit. I can't imagine any FF hack in 1982 being too delicate to say 'arse'.

Apart from death threats left on journos windscreens, my favourite piece of CJ slime was the Pat O Connor/Pat O Connor affair.

CJ's election agent is busted double voting early in the day.

    Panic stations.

The CJ/FF plumbers are called for.

'Who will rid me of this troublesome fact?'
    old snake eyes asks*

Paddy Public - those that matterd, those who voted in CJ's constituency - had to be kept in the dark.

    PJ smirks.

'There's an idea, keep them in the dark.'

In those pre-digital, smog shrouded days, rumours didn't travel like wildfire, they puttered across the city on chubby mopeds driven by two stroke madmen.

    The plumbers tailed them.

As the two strokes dropped the bundles of Herald and Press, the plumbers bought them en masse.

    But RTE?

The Blue Shirts and Stickies were going to wreak havoc.

So the local ESB sub power station meets with an accident.

    No news.

Those who had still to vote were kept in the dark.

    Then...

And this is the bit that says everything in case you think everything had not been said already.

...around midnight, with CJ victorious, a van pulled up outside the local FG HQ.

    The back doors opened.

And bundles of 100s and 100s of papers were kicked out onto the street.

All in a potent gesture of fook you.

It made me think the most judicious move might be to take a jaunt to the far side of the world.

    Too true.

After the General Election of 2011, where Fianna Fail were reduced to a rump, I was almost inclined to believe that maybe Ireland had changed. But it hasn't. We now have Fianna Fail Lite running the country. And it's déjà vu all over again.

Haughey's estate to get legal costs of 4/5m, this is truly sickening, a way should be found to get at the funds from the sale of his estate which ended up with his family who have no problem living off his ill-gotten gains.

From his grave he is still laughing and fupping us.

Shatter should get stuck in here somewhere, this is not right, Nooan should send them a dacent tax bill.

Can we now expect DOB and Lowry to get their costs and what about the little runt from Drummer when his turn comes.

What is fupping? I don't think that word is in the OED.
