interesting, if true
A controversial private investigator at the centre of the British hacking scandal has claimed to have sold his services to RTE.
Jonathan Rees (56) is at the centre of two separate police investigations in England over his role in providing information to media outlets there.
He was paid up to £150,000 (€187,000) a year by the 'News of the World' for providing information from corrupt police officers and other illegal sources.
But a legal document obtained by the Irish Independent shows how Rees once claimed to have been hired by Ireland's state broadcaster.
In an affidavit provided to the UK's Criminal Cases Review Commission, Rees named RTE as being one of the clients of his firm Southern Investigations.http://www.independent.ie/national-n...s-3234107.htmlAn RTE spokeswoman said: "An initial trawl of the company's records could find no record of any payments made to either Jonathan Rees or Southern Investigations."
She said, however, that she could not "rule out" that Rees was used as "many of the people who would have been in news and current affairs in the 1990s are no longer with RTE".

Not even O'Callaghan shilling for Fianna Fail saved Micheal Martin from being trounced by Adams. Sometimes I wonder why RTE even tolerates the facade that she's capabale of impartially moderating a debate involving Fianna Fail.

The Phil Hogan story finally appears on http://www.rte.ie at 12.52 pm. Not a word about it all morning.
The Carthy's were misnamed as McCarthy in Hogan's letter.

RTE banging on all day with negative lines about "social media" and online posting on the sad Jill Meagher case. Forgetting to mention that the police have repeatedly praised and thanked people posting online for the assistance given in solving the case.
RTE also not mentioning that Jill Meagher's husband has appealed to the News Media to leave the family in peace.
RTE is getting to be like a squeaky gate on this: not the appropriate time.
The biggest case of a prejudiced case I can think of was Mary Harney's bad words about Charlie Haughey, published in the Irish Independent, which got him off trial in relation to obstructing the McCracken Tribunal.

Social media was credited for helping to solve the Meagher case, but now it looks like it may just hurt it.
It all has to do with contempt of court, you see. Victoria Deputy Police Commissioner Graham Ashton explains:
Victoria Police has been overwhelmed by the enormity of the public support for this investigation expressed through social media.
Whilst the widespread willingness to assist has been most welcome, I must now ask that members of the social media community refrain from posting inappropriate comments that might jeopardise a successful prosecution.
Legislation dictates that nothing should be published that might prejudice the trial of an accused after they have been arrested or charged. That point has now been reached and as Jill’s husband rightly pointed out this morning, restraint must be exercised so that the judicial process can run its course.
Victoria Police remains incredibly grateful to all those who have sought to assist our investigations. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Jill’s family and friends at this most difficult time.
The courts represent the law of the land, and every citizen needs to respect the law for it to function correctly. To tweet or post something in contempt of court could risk the entire prosecution process, so please: think before you tweet.
Our thoughts go out to Jill Meagher’s family in this difficult time.
