Bishop Martin has made a speech critical of elements in the Church who he says don't want to tackle child abuse - he included in his comments church commentators.

RTE radio covered this in the news at 8.30 and again lunchtime. In the morning they had on Senator Ronan Mullen followed by the Editor of the Irish Catholic. After ten minutes comprehensive Martin-bashing by all three, Cahal McCoille finished off by saying "So has he (Martin) lost it then ?"

Lunchtime was an opportunity to restore the balance, so they had David Quinn on

The 9pm news on the 11th was a little late reporting the Protest outside the Dail I thought.

Were they afraid if they Led with it, half of Dublin would have joined in by 9.10?
The first robot president won by exactly one vote. Ah, yes! John Quincy Adding Machine. He struck a chord with the voters when he pledged not to go on a killing spree. But, like most politicians he promised more than he could deliver.

The late news bulletin on RTE 1 reported it as 'Gardai are investigating incidents outside the Dail involving a group which broke away from a protest march..'
There was absolutely no indication of what the march was about! What the hell are we paying a license fee for?

    Because they're worth it!
"It is we the workers who built these palaces and cities here in Spain and in America and everywhere. We, the workers, can build others to take their place. And better ones! We are not in the least afraid of ruins. We are going to inherit the earth; there is not the slightest doubt about that. The bourgeoisie might blast and ruin its own world before it leaves the stage of history. We carry a new world here, in our hearts."

They're beyond a joke. It was covered by the Belfast Telegraph, Sky, TV3 and probably in Australia and the Far East.

Any effect on the Euro, I wonder ?

Funny discussion with Richard Boyd Barrett and C McC this morning on RTE radio 1. How many were on the march ? RTE were saying 800, RBB said 1200-1500. The item finished and immediately the news bulletin on the hour gave it as 500. You could hear whoever was reading the news hesitating over it, just a little.

Anybody have the misfortune to hear Joe Duffy's piece on last night's protest march? Just about the most one sided piece of radio I have ever heard. The first caller was a guy who was at the the march and said he had got through the Garda line and into the Dail courtyard. Duffy refused to let him talk about why he was on the march and the reason for the march and kept asking if he was a member of Sinn Fein, The other caller was an obvious FF plant and trotted out all the usual governement lines. Caller one having finally admitted thaat he was a former member of Sinn Fein then asked Duffy who he voted for and said that Duffy was biased against SF. Joe lost the head completely at this stage and told the caller to make an official complaint about him to RTE. 15 minitues into the piece he said to the FF plant 'I'd better ask you if you are a member of a political party?' "Yes, Joe, I'm a member of Fianna Fail'. and Duffy carried out without any comment.
If anybody is stiill in doubt as to the lack of objectivity from Liveline it's well and truly settled now.
    Podcast is here:
    http://www.rte.ie/radio1/liveline/
According to Duffy's Wiki entry Liveline and RTE got an absolute roasting from Lenihan in September 2008 shortly before the bank guarantee because of a programme which had people ringing up and describing how they were taking their money out of the banks and hiding it under the mattress.
A senior figure in Irish banking called the show "absolutely its single most destructive broadcast ever"
Liveline have known which side their bread is buttered on since.

Just flicked past RTE 1 on my way to check out Miriam O'Callaghan to see a programme called RPA (reality hospital programme from Australia) clearly flagged as suitable for "mature audiences" with warnings about medical content.

Good one for 10.30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, while the childers are most likely to be watching unsupervised...

Of course if RTE were to film a 'reality hospital program' in Ireland it would be a very boring program ..... Do we have any working hospitals in Ireland anymore?

RTÉ as a whole have known what side their bread is buttered on ever since Gerry Collins eviscerated the Authority in 1972!

RTE's failure to show Katie Taylor's World Championship winning fight was as irritating as it was unsurprising.
