Default Candidate Profile number 5: Gay Mitchell

The Fine Gael party candidate, Gay Mitchell is a longstanding member of Fine Gael, and has a distinguished track record in that party. He has served as a junior minister and as Lord Mayor of Dublin at different stages throughout his career, although he has never actually held a senior cabinet position in government. He was also, along with Enda Kenny, a contender for party leader following the disastrous 2002 implosion of Fine Gael under Michael Noonan. Despite this distinguished record and his long running success in winning votes as an EU parliamentary candidate, Gay has remained controversial for a number of reasons. Chief among these are his conservative and catholic social views- he defended the views of an Italian colleague who referred to homosexuality as a sin, and he is involved in a number of catholic think tanks such as the Iona Institute. He has also stated previously that he believes Ireland should join Nato and has advocated the abandonment of the traditional policy of neutrality.

Gay has stated that he wants to bring Christian democratic values to the fore in his campaign, however I have been unable to find any more detailed programme than this on his website, so we'll have to wait for the man himself to launch his campaign before any further information is available.

Until then, you can use the links below to find out more about Gay, and when his candidacy is launched this thread and the links will be updated.

    Hilarious.

Gay Mitchell has convinced the Fine Gael Party that they need to support Independents to split Higgins vote.

As FIVE here pointed out yesterday, he's made a start by adopting the same campaign slogan as Mary White.

It's allowing FG councillors a free vote to nominate independents.

Bit of a turn around from the days of Horsey Hilde voting to refuse to even let Norris make a case for the nomination.

Today the IT is saying that what it published yesterday was rubbish. FG are not allowing their councillors a free vote for presidential nominations.

    oopsie daisy...

Mitchell and Davis red-faced over identical slogans

It has emerged that two Presidential election candidates have the exact same slogan for their campaign.

Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell and Independent candidate Mary Davis have both opted for the phrase — "Pride at home, respect abroad."

The only difference in their slogans is the punctuation.

Mr Mitchell has opted for a comma in the middle of the slogan, whereas Ms Davis has inserted a full-stop.

Both candidates insist they came up with the idea first and neither appear willing to change.

What's a broad? Why would one hug a hoodie?

    Probably.
McGuinness will galvanise the protest vote.
    (Could poll up to 25%)
ULA etc will vote soft left and transfer to Higgins.
Once Higgins is in front of McGuinness...He has it.
The Black Swan event could be The FF rump.
If they decide anyone but FG/Labour in the Aras then it will be interesting.

I see he is still refusing to admit his membership of a secret society.

As we all know he was a member, and possibly still is, he is therefore a liar.

I think he needs to come clean and tell us all he knows about that organisation's activities. After all, we don't want someone in Aras an Uachtarain who could be charged with complicity in cover-ups.
