Candidate Profile number 5: Gay Mitchell
The Fine Gael party candidate, Gay Mitchell is a longstanding member of Fine Gael, and has a distinguished track record in that party. He has served as a junior minister and as Lord Mayor of Dublin at different stages throughout his career, although he has never actually held a senior cabinet position in government. He was also, along with Enda Kenny, a contender for party leader following the disastrous 2002 implosion of Fine Gael under Michael Noonan. Despite this distinguished record and his long running success in winning votes as an EU parliamentary candidate, Gay has remained controversial for a number of reasons. Chief among these are his conservative and catholic social views- he defended the views of an Italian colleague who referred to homosexuality as a sin, and he is involved in a number of catholic think tanks such as the Iona Institute. He has also stated previously that he believes Ireland should join Nato and has advocated the abandonment of the traditional policy of neutrality.
Gay has stated that he wants to bring Christian democratic values to the fore in his campaign, however I have been unable to find any more detailed programme than this on his website, so we'll have to wait for the man himself to launch his campaign before any further information is available.
Until then, you can use the links below to find out more about Gay, and when his candidacy is launched this thread and the links will be updated.
