Standing on the street in Portlaoise about an hour ago when a car passed me - couple in the front, her driving, him with infant on his knee. Two small kids, 3-5 age group in the back. Not one of them wearing seatbelts.

Should be a disqualification for the driver but even if the Traffic Corps are freed up from cash escort duties for the night, chances are it will be just a slap on the wrist.

Changes to the drink drive limits on the way but incredibly, the penalty is being reduced for those who are only caught once every 3 years.

Then again, it's probably all academic since the redeployment of traffic units to other duties means the chance of getting caught is negligible.

I'm not sure that there should be the same penalty exacted if you're a millimeter above the limit, or a mile above the limit.

    Seems fair enough to me.

A drunk scumbag got nine months in jail for driving the wrong way on a motorway and having no insurance.

No, of course it wasn't here - It was in the UK. If it was here she'd have got 3 points and a €150 fine.

Anyone remember this rap from a road safety TV ad?:

    Johnny was a fool
    he didn't act cool
    he walked on out
    he broke every rule

    That's all I remember!

World vehicle population surpasses one Billion. Not all headed down my road, I hope. 27% increase in China in 2010.

Well the only camera's I have seen or heard about are on straight stretches of road, I know of one ***** accident on the road 20+ years ago not exactly a blackspot.

Since coming bac to our green shores almost a month ago I'm shocked by the naked aggression of the cyclists, basically the motorists are being held hostage by a number of crazy cyclists determined to bull their way through traffic or create an accident where the nmotorist get's sued.

Last week had a cyclist ride through a red light and only I copped him an stopped there could have been an accident, what did I get for my trouble? the finger.
ignorant [email protected] Followed by a parent pushing his child on a his cycle up the hill in clonskeagh, of course worsened by the fact that the parent was cycling abreast whilst doing so, followed 5 minutes later by the same carry on with probably the opther parent and child ... except they were doing it contraflow in the cycle lane.
Bunch of idiots and asses giving the law abiding and road aware cyclists a bad name. OTOH saw a fool in a car cross a jucntion almost taking out 2 cyclists and a car, followed by the next car behind him doing the same thing!.

2 weeks back we heard about a new traffic camera to monitor red light bashing by cars and especially cyclists resulting in a heap of accidents with the LUAS. what will they do? send the Gardai looking for a cyclist with red jacket etc? Not enough gardai to enforce the rules anyway.
    Nothing to see here

€400 and a two year ban for killing someone while over the limit.

If he'd shot his victim because he was handling a shotgun irresponsibly while pissed he'd have faced jail for manslaughter but because he killed her with his car he gets a slap on the wrist.

We really need to get serious about killer drivers and end this lethal mollycoddling.

It seems that a tyre safety demo shown on RTE the other night was rigged by deactivating the ABS on the car with the bad tyres.

If that's the sort of conduct that the Irish Tyre Industry Association thinks is ethical I certainly wont be doing business with its members.

Your local ITIA members are on their website.

A Mayo driver has been given a 2 year ban after being caught using his mobile while driving for a fourth time.

Drivers who get banned, particularly when the ban is for repeat offences should have to start over with a learners permit once their ban has expired.

One of the gobsh!tes involved in the notorious YouTube clip of dangerous driving near Nenagh has got 4 months in jail for his troubles.

It's good to see the courts taking reckless driving seriously. If these apes want to get themselves a Darwin Award it's their own business but the rest of us shouldn't be put at risk while they do it.

Couldn't agree more.... we were bringing the kids back from swimming (in the dark) the other night and were slowly pulling up to a junction with a main road when a mad cyclist came around the corner on the wrong side of the road, no lights etc. My husband (the driver on that occasion), opened the car window to point this out when the guy stopped to yell at him... the only reason he wasn't hit is because we'd just come out of another road and were almost stationary....yer man just yelled abuse and said if we'd hit him, we'd be in trouble. Well, as the husband said, .."and you'd be dead"..... Apparently this moron was under the impression that cars should stop at the stop sign (10 m back from the road), not the white line adjacent to the junction. Well, if that were the case, no one would ever manage to pull out onto a main road, ever. Needless to say, that didn't cover the wrong side of the road/no lights issues, either.

However, hard to say what would have happened if there had been an accident, as I'm not sure spouses can give supporting evidence in court in the event of a dispute over whose fault it was, and given that, it's one man's word against another.

in fairness though, said idiot was eastern European by accent, not Irish. Not that there aren't enough of them that are....
