Default Geert Wilders acquitted by Dutch Courts

'The court had used a Supreme Court ruling -- that an offensive statement about someone's religion was not a criminal offence -- as the basis of its decision, leading to acquittal, the judge said.' http://in.reuters.com/article/2011/0...57870320110623

Hip hip bloody hooray. Not particularly a fan of Wilders myself but this court ruling is correct in my opinion.

The reason I applaud the decision is because of the principle behind it- no-one has the right to have unsubstantiated personal beliefs free from questioning or criticism and this court is right on the button in my opinion and whether it is Wilders or a cartoonist or an Islamic preacher commenting on christianity or the west is irrelevant to me.

The Dutch yet again show their level headedness.

As it happens I am very suspicious of Wilders and his motivation. But he did exercise the right to free speech and the Dutch Courts have upheld that right.

A conviction would have been an affront to the principle of free speech in the Netherlands.

Prat Dermot Aherne please take note.

It is a correct decision notwithstanding the the privileges demanded for Catholic iconography by the Bishop of Cork and Ross.

Absolutely! It is often more challenging to support the just cause of someone you abhor.

True- sometimes you have to grit your teeth and defend someone you dislike's right to an opinion no matter how dangerous or dislikeable their point may be.

Thats the kind of thing worth defending in society. A pain in the ass at times but worth preserving and the only people who try to curtail free speech whether from the right or left are members of the Tir Na N'og Party (pretend life is other than it is and paradise will appear).

Can't stand people like David Irving for example but in allowing him to make his claims they can be argued with and countered. Drive a philosophy underground and you create a movement or cause celebre...

Altogether healthier to have issues debatable no matter how grim.

    Let's not get carried away.
    Geert is a tool.

He just hasn't broken Dutch law with his toolishness (toolism?).

    True!
