Trump will announce his decision on Paris at 3pm Thursday. Lots of political and corporate lobbying to stay in, but signs are he'll pull out. If he does, it will be less a rejection of science and more a desire to satisfy his base.

Trumps speech announcing withdrawing from the Paris accord.

Agree or disagree with him, he is not the complete buffoon we are led to believe. The non-Trotskyist left badly need communicators like him:

    Number of the day........

24: Per Bloomberg, "Of the 66 nuclear power plants operating in the U.S., 24 are either scheduled to close or probably won’t make money through 2021, according Nicholas Steckler, an analyst with Bloomberg New Energy Finance."
Between the lines: Some climate advocates are growing increasingly worried that progress in decarbonizing the power sector will hit the brakes if large amounts of existing nuclear plants go offline.
Go deeper: We looked at the climate stakes of nuclear plant retirements here and here.

The weather events of the last six months, globally, have been a striking phenomenon. Personally I've experienced hurricane, snow and heat of 33 degrees, with drought, all in the last six months, in a place which has in recent history been normally mild and damp winter and summer. People in Australia were telling me about their never ending summer and autumn that didn't happen. The US has had dramatic extremes of heat and cold, snow and floods. Continental Europe and the UK are experiencing intense heat - in Portugal heading for 50.

We are living with a warm globe with high levels of CO2.

Interesting on life way back when the planet was really hot.

    Current Economist Cover Story.........

"Rising energy demand means use of fossil fuels is heading in the wrong direction," The Economist reports in its lead editorial:

    • "Earth is smouldering. From Seattle to Siberia this summer, flames have consumed swathes of the northern hemisphere."
    • Why it matters: "[C]alamities, once considered freakish, are now commonplace."

Be smart: "Averting climate change will come at a short-term financial cost — although the shift from carbon may eventually enrich the economy, as the move to carbon-burning cars, lorries and electricity did in the 20th century."

California is currently experiencing it's largest ever wildfire......

The damage of this massive California wildfire (440 square miles) is being extended by much wider spread smoke damage. Containment not expected until next week, the fire is expected to continue for the rest of this month.

33 million people at risk of extreme heat in the US, currently.

There are 16 - 18 "major" fires currently burning in CA. Almost 1200 square miles burned so far this year.

Only 400 or so less than Hurricane Katrina in N'Awlins, and no guarantee it won't go higher still.

Puerto Rico massively updates its Hurricane Maria death toll
    • The Puerto Rican government "quietly acknowledged" on Thursday that Hurricane Maria killed 1,427 residents. The government had previously said only 64 people died in the storm's aftermath. [NYT / Frances Robles]
    • The announcement came in a report detailing a $139 billion reconstruction plan needed to restore infrastructure across the entire island, which is home to 3.3 million people. [AP]
    • This is still a highly contested figure. A Harvard University study reports that anywhere from 800 to 8,500 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria. [USA Today / Rick Jervis]
    • Though some were killed amid the destruction of Hurricane Maria, many were killed in the storm's aftermath because of nonfunctioning hospitals and a lack of medical care. Resulting power outages also caused an increase in deaths due to diabetes, heart illnesses, and sepsis. [Vox / Umair Irfan]
    • Hurricanes Maria and Irma caused countrywide blackouts that broke records as the largest power outages in American history. Blackouts continue to persist on the island. [BBC]
    • The US government has done very little to support the struggling US territory. Still, President Trump thinks the government has done a "great job" with rescue efforts. They should be "very proud," he said. [Guardian / Amanda Holpuch and Oliver Laughland]
