You should tell that story New Vision, seriously, we'd all like to hear it

With current international commitments we will not even stay below 2°C. It'll rather be 3-4 degrees by the end of this century. And that's not the end of the line.

Remember that CO2 stays in the atmosphere for many centuries if not millennia. The only way to avoid disaster is radical action! It's not too late. But there's no more that much time left.

Radical climate action not so far away...

Renewable energy made up just over 41% of Germany’s power supply last month, the most ever at around 19.5 TWh. It’s a good thing, too, because nuclear power production may have fallen to its lowest monthly level since the 1970s – even though no nuclear plant has been switched off since 2015. Meanwhile, has France’s tentative nuclear reduction reached a milestone? Craig Morris takes a look.

=> March was a record month for renewable power in Germany

By comparison, Ireland's electricity demand is about 27 TWh per year.

And there is more encouraging news...

Germany’s first competitive auction for offshore wind projects has not only delivered an average bid price that was “far below expectations” according to the Bundesnetzagentur, but also included what is likely one of the world’s first subsidy-free offshore wind projects.

Germany’s federal energy markets regulator, the Bundesnetzagentur, announced Thursday the results of its first auction for offshore wind farms — which included bids for grid connections and funding for existing offshore wind farm projects. According to the Bundesnetzagentur, the average weighted average was 0.44 Euro cents per kilowatt hour, which was “far below expectations.”

This is in particular remarkable as offshore wind capacity is usually more than twice as expensive as onshore capacity. Well done, Danish DONG Energy! This proves again that renewables are cheaper than fossil fuels. Not just in the long run, but also in the short term.

The Financial Times: Denmark’s Dong Energy shifts from fossil fuels to renewables

As climate change has risen steadily up the list of global concerns, fossil-fuel companies around the world have lined up to support action to curb it.

ExxonMobil, the largest listed oil group, says the 2016 Paris climate agreement, which aims to limit global warming, is an “important step forward”. Coal miner Anglo American wants to cut its carbon emissions. Saudi Aramco, the largest crude exporter, backs a $1bn industry plan to fund low-carbon technologies.

Yet few have done anything as radical as Denmark’s Dong Energy. While Dong may be a minnow compared with the likes of Exxon, its roots lie in fossil fuels. As does its name, which stands for Danish Oil and Natural Gas.

The Danish state set up the company 45 years ago and it became a regional player in the North Sea before expanding into the European electricity-generating market. Over the past decade, however, it has gradually turned its back on oil, gas and coal to become a champion of green energy.

It is now the world’s largest offshore wind farm company, having built more than a quarter of the capacity in operation globally — it installed its 1,000th sea-based wind turbine last year.

Meanwhile, it is preparing to sell off its oil and gas business this year after floating on the Copenhagen stock exchange in 2016. From 16 per cent in 2007, the proportion of its capital tied up in wind farms had jumped to 75 per cent in 2015.

Dong is also backing pioneering technology that turns household rubbish into electricity and has been converting coal power stations in its utility subsidiary to burn wood. In February, it announced its power stations would stop using coal altogether by 2023.

“It’s an astonishing transformation,” says Jens Houe Thomsen, an analyst at Denmark’s Jyske Bank. “It is hard to think of many other oil and gas companies that have made as big a shift as Dong has away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy.”

Support for keeping the United States in the landmark Paris climate deal of 2015 seems to be gaining traction, reports the New York Times...

Several US' fossil fuel moguls don't want to see their country becoming the biggest banana republic when it comes to climate action. But the commitments of the USA will certainly not be sufficient.

Humans on the verge of causing Earth’s fastest climate change in 50m years

    17 April 2017

A new study published in Nature Communications looks at changes in solar activity and carbon dioxide levels over the past 420 million years. The authors found that on our current path, by mid-century humans will be causing the fastest climate change in approximately 50 million years, and if we burn all available fossil fuels, we’ll cause the fastest change in the entire 420 million year record.

March Was Second Hottest on Record Globally

The exceptional global heat of the past few years continued last month, with March ranking as the second hottest on record for the planet. It followed the second hottest February and third hottest January, showing just how much Earth has warmed from the continued buildup of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

March was 2.02°F (1.12°C) warmer than the 1951-1980 average, according to NASA data released Friday. It ranks behind only March 2016, which was 2.29°F (1.27°C) above that same average. NASA’s global temperature records extend back 137 years.

While global temperatures in 2016 received a small boost from an exceptionally strong El Niño — which features warmer-than normal ocean waters in the eastern tropical Pacific — the majority of the temperature rise is due to human-caused global warming.

Current levels of carbon dioxide — the main greenhouse gas driving up global temperatures — are unprecedented in human history, and if they continued unabated, could reach a level not seen in the atmosphere in 50 million years, according to a recent study.

Any successful solar projects in Ireland?

Are there still people who do not believe that sea-levels are rising?

I suspect one frequent poster to this thread falls into that category.
As a general rule the most successful man in life is the man who has the best information.
