Default Anything You Are Liking About Life In the Recession ?

Just catching up with the reports on road traffic accidents - March was the safest month for 50 years.

Part of the reason is the improved standard of roads, but its also clear that traffic volumes have dropped.

It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. I obviously don't welcome uncertainty, mass unemployment, the crashing living standards of the recession, but I hated a lot about the boom.

The insane work pressures have eased (for some people), and the bullshit quotient in public life has reduced. Fewer people have died on the roads.

Anything else good about the recession ?

I am glad that I do not have to listen to bores telling me how much their houses are worth, their holidays in increasingly exotic regions, their stupid parties and their displays of ostentation in general.

People are less scared to politically 'rock the boat'. No-one thanked anyone for exposing corruption or warning of impending catastrophe when the money was there, now people are beginning to see and say what they think. The sniveller Ahern is now, finally, seen for what he was. And the jumped-up nobodies talking about their 'portfolios' in shares and foreign property around the IFSC are a little more quiet now...

Nothing - most of my friends are unemployed, about to be made redundant or on the plane to another country. Several acquaintences have taken their own lives. It is not a good time.

I am the only one of my generation in my family left in the country

There is alot of nonsense on the media bout the recession. We had journalists going to knitting groups in Dublin two years ago telling is the latest thing was for celtic tiger women to join craft groups. Today they go to the same groups and tell us that they're taking off because of the recession. No cause or effect, most of what we see about this sort of stuff is spinny nonsense.

I have a friend who is a "financial adviser" and spent the good years telling me how mad I was not to be buying an "investment" house while I was busting my back to pay as much off our mortgage as possible.
I enjoy it now when he doesn t mention mortgages or investments.

I enjoy the fact that house prices are falling back towards a place where first time buyers have a mission of getting a place to live. (Not there yet)

    ...and PK's budget recipes.

    Low house prices.
Building of 8 bedroomed Mc Mansions in the country has stopped/slowed down.
You not obliged to leave 10 or 20 euros as tips after a meal.
Pretentious restaurants and overpriced hotels have gone bust.
Buying a new car every year or two is frowned upon.
Being unemployed has crossed all classes and has lost it's stigma. No longer a working class thing.
    4x4 sales are down.
Some extremely rotten people are suffering financially.

Not just a drop in volumes but a huge drop in boy racers in souped up cars on the roads. The recession has probably saved some of their lives.

A big positive for me as a town dweller is the elimination of the hordes of drunken scum-bags who fought, shouted, pissed and puked their way around the streets every weekend.

More time to learn new and interesting topics. People are more mannerly. Less accountants selling ponzi schemes and interfering in your personal life. Being part of history when the Revolutionary Council assumes control.
"When people fear the government, we have tyranny. When the government fear the people we have liberty."

The lack of new cars, the fact that it's once again unbelievably vulgar and rude to discuss house prices, money and employment status again.

I also like the fact that manners and decency are resurfacing as what we should aspire to.

EVERYTHING ELSE sucks though. And the above, in no way compensates for what has been done by Ahearn and Co.

I am loving the revisionism by FF and their goon supporters. "sure we knew property would crash, it could not last", compare this to 4 years ago "quick, buy a shoebox or you will be left behind", with 2 years ago, "there will be a soft landing".

    idiots.
