Why shouldn't it be, though? I would expect proportionality, in any sphere, or else I start to wonder why.

Why isn't it? That's the question I asked.

One occupation where there an obvious imbalance between women and men is teaching which is very female dominated. Would you support quotas for men in that profession?

If women only make up 15% of candidates it would hint that they were typically 3 times as competent as men if they took 50% of the top jobs. Hardly plausible.

Why do they only make up 15% of candidates? I asked why isn't there proportionality at the top level, obviously there are processes towards getting there.
Do you know why there aren't equal proportions of men and women, can you make a reasonably educated guess?

Women and Feminists in particular would want to look at these arguments a little more closely.

Primary school teachers and nurses are in the main, the domain of women.

The pay for these jobs is good, yet the cost of these jobs is double the cost it should be.

    Why?

    Children and Pregnancy.

That it is as it should be, but women cannot complain about inequality, when this is the case.

When can a man/ scoolteacher get paid for raising his child? When can a man get 6 months off work with full pay?

The cost of a working women is higher than the cost of a working man.

Fact. Reallity. Whatever you want to call it, but it is a fact. We are different and have different needs an expectations.

Over the last 3 years in my kids school, all of the teachers got paid exactly the same, yet the 1 male teacher worked twice the hours of the female teachers.

No complaints from the male teacher. He recognises the fact that he cannot have babies and is not entitled to extra time off.

No doubt there are myriad reasons but I don't know of any that would justify statutory sexism or conceding the principle that governments can penalise rival parties that don't run approved candidates.

Of late I see more and more hostility to both pensioners and pregnant women. I wonder if it's something that was always there or if it's just a fearful lashing out at vulnerable groups and blaming us for all the trouble the country is in.

FG to discuss gender quotas at their end of term review today according to the IT.

I suspect that the new constituency of Laois will get one of the FG token women candidates. Sitting TD Charlie Flanagan is 100% safe so he wont be worried about doing his bit to make up the numbers.

Electoral (Amendment) (Political Funding) Bill 2011 passed by the Dail. Far from perfect but a big step none the less

A big sexist, tokenist, undemocratic step.

Hmmm, the opposition in its entirety left the chamber before this item came up for debate. Very convenient.

Stephen Donnelly made an excellent contribution that is worth revisiting as did Catherine Murphy who had almost every amendment she put down ruled out.
