Default Re: Newtownabbey Council Elections 2011

Councillor Billy Webb was elected in 2005 on the 'Newtownabbey Ratepayers Assoc' which has since dissolved with Webb joining Alliance.

The Independent Unionist is a colourful character. Tommy Kirkham was initially elected as a DUP Councillor in 1989 but became involved with the paramilitary

steering UPRG on the UDA faction.

He had quite a high profile meeting the southern government and often seen with Jackie McDonald.

He left the UPRG and sided with the UDA's SE Antrim Brigade which split from the main UDA. He became the head of a new group called 'Beyond Conflict' which demanded £8million from the Government to 'transform' the UDA. The UPRG got the money but the SE Antrim faction got nothing.

He backed the Andre Shoukri faction in its feud with the UDA leadership which eventually expelled him from the area but Tommy refused to move. This despite his house being attacked previously by gang loyal to Shoukri's close associate Johnny Adair. (Ye gotta love Loyalist feuds)

He is also the head of a group known as 'The Ulster Protestant League' but a great deal of doubt exists as to whether or not it has any other members.

In 2010, he refused to give evidence at the trial of a man charged with a sectarian murder in 1973 until the Judge told him failure to do so would result in his arrest and prosecution.
