After the 2005 election, DUP Councillor Mark Russell defected to the TUV but later decided to resign his seat.

Following a public dispute between themselves and the DUP about co-option, a bi-election was called and the UUP candidate hammered the TUV's most famous non-seat belt wearer David Calvert. The DUP did not stand.

Calvert himself was a former DUP Deputy Mayor of the borough was one of 12 Unionists banned from standing after their refusal to make available land to a GAA club.
