    Default Patricia Campbell

Patricia Campbell is a nurse from Derrytresk, Co Tyrone and is an active trade unionist and president of the Independent Workers Union. She has a long record of work as a community activist in the Tyrone area and elsewhere and recently played an energetic part in the successful campaign to prevent the Stormont coalition’s attempt to pass legislation curtailing peoples freedom of assembly with its notorious ‘37 day order’. Patricia has also campaigned in support of the Palestinian people and spoke out on behalf of undocumented Irish workers at Labour Notes conferences in the USA.

Patricia Campbell began her life of political activism over thirty years ago when she worked tirelessly in the campaign for political status for republican prisoners. A leading activist through the grim days of the hunger strikes, Patricia was and remains a dedicated and determined republican who believes that the union with Britain and the partition of Ireland are issues that must be addressed as a mater of urgency and not postponed indefinitely as the current arrangement is guaranteed to do.

Patricia recently announced her intention to contest the upcoming local government election, as an independent republican candidate, for Torrent ward in the Dungannon District Council area.

Patricia Campbell believes that local government is a vital arena allowing its elected representatives an important opportunity to hold the Stormont Executive all-party coalition to account. At a period of savage budget cuts being implemented by the Stormont Executive, Patricia Campbell insists that only a strong independent will ask the questions that must be asked and demand the answers that people need. Local government representatives who are members of the political parties participating in the Executive coalition are incapable of holding their colleagues in Stormont to account, she maintains.

Patricia Campbell has highlighted the impact that budgetary cutbacks are having on the Torrent ward.
    • Emmigration. Lack of opportunity and employment has forced some of our best and brightest young people to seek their future abroad
    • Downgrading of quality health care facilities
    • Failure to upgrade necessary infrastructure
    • Under-representation of the people of this ward
"Do not be misled by the promises of politicians. Remember that the whole history of Ireland is a record of betrayals by politicians and statesmen, and remembering this, spurn their lying promises and stand up for a United Ireland - an Ireland broad based upon the union of Labour and Nationality." - James Connolly.
