Maybe they had seven times more deserters.

The treatment of Irish soldiers under British military law might be worth a thread of its own.

    Good idea.

I hadnt heard that before. That irish soldiers were disproportionately punished versus other soldiers within the british army.

The issue of "the high proportion of executions among Irish soldiers" was raised by Senator John Minihan (PD) in a Seanad debate in 2006.

This really should be dealt with in a thread of its own... mods?

Going to see this tonight. Tells the story of a kid who disappeared in Texas aged 14. Three years later some French kid turns up and amazingly manages to fool the parents and the community into believing he was the missing teenager. I have been avoiding reading the synopsis and other things like that to keep my interest piqued!

Two seminal movies that spawned a slew of English version remakes.

Seven Samurai, the inspiration for The Magnificent Seven, tells the story of seven ronin (masterless samurai) who defend a village from bandits.

Rashomon, recounts a murder through the eyes of several witnesses, the victim, the perp etc.

70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.
Have read this a couple of times, nicknamed 'kids in space' by fans, the novel's cult status finally led to an adaptation, currently in post production due to be released in fall 2013.

Wouldn't bother with the subsequent five novels, this is as good as it gets.

One should go at once to see Lenny's astounding 'What Richard Did.'

    World class stuff.

Bergman Nordic gloom and New Hampshire optimism clash in Dalkey.

    Superb.

One can see how he got serious backing to tackle his next project: the Gitta Sereny book/interview with Franz Stangl the commandant of Treblinka.

Not alone is he the real deal, he's a perfect gent too.

    Lenny not Franz.

IMDB doesn’t have a lot of info on the movie can you shed more light on the plot?

Recently saw the trailer for the soon to be released Spielberg/Daniel Day Lewis/ Abe Lincoln movie. It’s based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s bestseller “Team of Rivals”
Was not overly impressed, but since I'm a sucker for political movies I’ll be out the door to see it as soon as it is out anyway.

There is a good 'political movies" thread growing here; it has triggered my reviewing my movie consumption of late.

The Sword of Doom tells the story of Ryunosuke and his life's descent into chaos, and violence. This one has taken me several viewings to come to grips with.

I am interested in anyone's opinion on this movie.

    Never thought about that.
Reincarnation is a theme in the novel but I missed it the first time. Mitchell uses motifs such as birthmarks shaped like comets that seem reminiscent of such mythical tropes.
In his other novels he lingers on amorphous smoke signals, random movements of elemental forces; it generates an ambiance of transience, impermanence.

Ben Affleck is not reknown for his political savy in films but this one is being tipped by critics to do well at the Oscars next year. Im heading to see it tommorrow night so will report back (if I rememer).

    Synopsis from IMDB

In 1979, the American embassy in Iran was invaded by Iranian revolutionaries and several Americans are taken hostage. However, six manage to escape to the official residence of the Canadian Ambassador and the CIA is eventually ordered to get them out of the country. With few options, exfiltration expert Tony Mendez devises a daring plan: to create a phony Canadian film project looking to shoot in Iran and smuggle the Americans out as its production crew. With the help of some trusted Hollywood contacts, Mendez creates the ruse and proceeds to Iran as its associate producer. However, time is running out with the Iranian security forces closing in on the truth while both his charges and the White House have grave doubts about the operation themselves.
