In the current cabinet the minister with the greatest experience in an area related to his brief is James Reilly. Not exactly a great advertisement for switching from government to management of government departments, is he?

No, but FG seem to be happy with his vested interests as long as he follows their privatisation objectives.

No, but FG seem to be happy with his vested interests as long as he follows their privatisation objectives.

FG never made any secret of their privatisation agenda so they are justified in saying they have a mandate to implement it.

This notion that ministers should have expertise and experience in an area related to their department is superficially attractive but I think it's ultimately flawed.

Ministers should be advancing the political policy of their governments, not grubbing around micro-managing the detail.
