One of these days one of these people with a libel or defamation lawyer on speed-dial in Ireland is going to lose a case and will then henceforth be legally defined as a Fking Knut or as it would appear around these parts a '******* ****'

Sunday paper tweets from Frank Fitzgibbon of the Sunday Times:
SunTimesNews: There's noone as Irish than Barack Obama...except Rep Veep candidate Paul Ryan, who beats him by a generation. We nail it down
SunTimesNews: Major Irish organisation contributes €25k to help fund film on life of Cork girl Joanne O'Riordan, born with no limbs
SunTimes News: Dad's got a brand new combine harvester, I'm going to college for free. Yes, we've lots on farmers and third level grants
SunTimesNews: Sam Smyth threatens Michael Lowry with bankruptcy if he doesn't pay legal fees for failed libel action
SunTimesSurvey: Dozens of historic homes and gardens remain closed to public in Heritage week, breaching rules governing their tax relief
SunTimesNews: Mahon asked to explain what it will do with hundreds of hours of video evidence, inc Grainne Carruth's tearful testimony
SunTimesNews: We track down Irishman who appeared on UK's list of most wanted tax fraudsters. He's living and working in Galway
SunTimesNews: Did somebody say crime wave? We reveal the three garda stations that recorded just three crimes each last year
SunTimesNews: Oireachtas committee to grill Mike Aynesley of IBRC on relationship with developer Paddy McKillen
SBP says pressure growing for PRSI hike in budget as deficit grows in social insurance fund
SunWorld splashes with Mick McCaffrey exclusive on new "Larry Murphy" roaming the streets despite arrest for drugging and raping prostitutes
Sindo has word with Karen Woods whose Mountjoy visits are now a regular feature for the Sundays and the fashionistas. She's missing Sean Jr
Sindo follows up our house-buying Nama executive yarn from the other week. Still no sign of the internal investigation
It's mid-August. Anne Harris devotes half page to attacking yours truly. Makes change from attacking Denis O'Brien. He owes me one
Scrap that. The Denis O'Brien feature is contained in a full page interview between Anne and James Osborne, former INM chairman
"I was stabbed in the back - O'Brien never said he was voting against me," Osborne claims. He details example of editorial interference too

Any one planning to visit James O'Reilly's house this Heritage Week?
    Would love a report here.

Anne Harris is all upset that no one is taking Brave reporter' Niamh Horan's allegations that she was chased by a broken glass wielding Tom McFeely in Portugal very seriously.

    http://www.independent.ie/opinion/an...k-3203458.html

It's all down to misogyny of course. Frank Fitzgibbon is a man so naturally if he's anything less than 100% in agreement with a woman he must be a misogynist. Twitter is 'mostly male' so again the misogyny is to be expected.

Unfortunately for poor Anne, the various women's organisations didn't fight each other to be at the head of the queue to defend the 'brave reporter' - "What is mystifying is that there was not one word." Looks like The National Women's Council has gone all misogynist.

I haven't read the original article and can't find a link to it.

It sounds like a matter for the Gardaí to deal with, one way or another.

The tussle between the Indo and Sunday Times looks more like professional competitivity than sexism.

Journalists take risks all the time, to get stories. That doesn't justify physical threats to them, as alleged.

More seriously, why did Niamh's colleagues leave her all on her own on her birthday ?

The gardaí haven't enough squad cars to cover Portarlington so Portugal might be a bit of a stretch.

In a bid to blow this thing up into a sexist issue Harris has gone so far as to claim that Twitter is mostly male. To their credit, women's organisations aren't biting.

And that's all it is - an allegation.

Could it be that the brave reporter was too humble to tell them it was her birthday in case they made a fuss and instead just went off to have a sad, lonely little drink on her own?

The story as presented by the Indo is a bit fishy. The only reason that Niamh Horan and a photographer would be there is that they were doing a story on McFeely. Why did she doorstep him in a bar after the photographer had presumably knocked off for the evening? Had they already had any contact with him earlier that day? Was there an attempt to provoke a reaction to big up the story?
Saying that, anyone who attempts to attack a journalist with a broken glass should face charges if the facts can be proved. I don't recall hearing that Niamh Horan made any kind of complaint to the local police force.

    Now isn't that interesting?

There would surely have been several witnesses if a thug brandishing a broken glass chased a brave reporter out of a pub.

If, on the other hand, a man who was being harassed by someone sticking a camera in his face, jumped up, knocked over his table and broke a glass, the police might not be too worried.

Tweets from John Burns of the ST. Not much new as the silly season drags to a close.
Sindo splash is "outrage at 'crazy' and 'unfair' tax on homes". Written by as many journalists (3) as people condemning the property tax
Anne Harris is once again writing about a Sunday Times journalist (Sindo, p1) but being nice, for a change
how's this for fence sitting: Paidi O Se in Sindo says "it'll be Cork's day - but Donegal could run riot". Yerra, thanks Paidi.
Sindo and Sunday Times both report that a guy who heckled Pat Rabbitte over his lunch in Buswells hotel on Friday was arrested
Sindo p4 reports that Fine Gael and Labour are rowing back on Seanad abolition. Not one named source in the whole piece, however
Fans of Eoghan Harries - both of you - don't bother with Sindo tomorrow. He ain't there.
Sunday Times sport: exclusive extract from Geordan Murphy's new book, including his skirmishes with Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan
Two attacks on Sunday Times in Sindo's letters column - both by anonymous correspondents. Our policy is not to publish letters without names
Sunday Bizz Post leads with "new threat of airport chaos", with rolling strikes due from September 20 afflicting Aer Lingus and others
Bizz Post p1: Leslie Buckley is tipped to become the new chair of Independent News & Media just over a year after he voted off the board
"Management at INM has stated major cost restructuring is required and Buckley has considerable experience in this area" Bizz Post notes
Bizz Post p5 reports Barry Desmond saying there was a plan to tax child benefit for well off people in the 80s but blocked by Fine Gael
Bizz Post p11 asks "just what makes lawyer Gerald Kean tick"? Hmm. Maybe he just is!
Back of Bizz Post: Vincent Browne says "let the TV cameras into Sean FitzPatrick trial" No legal prohibition on this, apparently
Just like Atticus, back page of Bizz Post previews the, ahem, highly anticipated debut single from @paulgogarty

    A couple more..
Also in Sunday Times News @mark_tighe has a first interview with former DPP James Hamilton who talks about Ian Bailey, inter alia
Sunday Times p1 tomorrow: Gardai arrest "wrong" man at Pat Rabbitte's much interrupted lunch at Buswells
Sunday Times p1: We have details of another extraordinary libel case involving Fr Kevin Reynolds, the priest defamed by RTE
And Sunday Times splash: Phil Hogan defies officials' advice and meets a firm planning to tender for evoting machines, at behest of FG TD
    Evoting, wha?
