Government TD defends €100,000 Nama salaries to developers

O'Dowd claimed that it would be a lot more expensive for the State if receivers were to be appointed instead.

"The assets have to be managed in the best interests of the taxpayer and the State," he said.

"The alternative to certain developers, and not all of them - I think it's only developers who actually fully and absolutely compliant - is to put in receivers who would be far more expensive, and if Nama is satisfied that they have transparency and accountability from the developers concerned - and they’re not actually paying them but I accept that the money is coming out of the accounts of the company - if that is in the interests of the State, that is the most efficient way to do it."

Amazing that being in government can completely change one's opinion. Does O'Dowd no longer think Developers should be investigated, and instead receive lerge salaries?

A change of Government is needed if these changes are to take place. The Green Party has the option of walking away from Fianna Fáil and causing an election. We need a mandate for the future and people are crying out for change, but they will not get it if this Government continues to stick together. At the margins of our constituencies, people are losing their jobs and their hope because the Government has no credibility. In the name of God, it is time for the Government to go. We must have a general election so that the people can decide. They will choose to get rid of Fianna Fáil and, if Green Party Members want to go down with the ship, let them. This side of the House believes it offers a credible alternative and new hope.

Fine Gael has created a constructive stimulus package, which Deputy Coveney has outlined for the Government. We must offer hope and change. The new green economy which we propose will create over 100,000 jobs given a Government with the determination, conviction and idealism to make the necessary changes. Clearly, however, the Government lacks these attributes.

NPRF being raided again

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin will announce a multibillion-euro stimulus programme for the economy this week, the Sunday Independent has learned.

It comes in the wake of the banking deal at an EU summit and the introduction of the Insolvency Bill.

Ministers are remaining tight-lipped about what will be seen a major coup but one top-level source told this newspaper it would be "a multibillion-euro package involving an initial additional €2bn investment in infrastructural projects".

The fund will be sourced from the European Investment Bank and €750m will come from the National Pension Reserve Fund, with the balance coming from private-public finance and the proceeds from the sale of State assets, such as the National Lottery licence.

Top political figures were anxious to confirm the money is additional capital spending. One said: "It's new, as distinct from a re-announcement of old packages."

They added that the projects involved had been promised "but they were at the bottom of the list; this additional spending means they go to the top of the list and are started as quickly as possible".

"The troika are still obsessed with debt and the balance sheet but were bluntly told by Brendan Howlin that we urgently need to accelerate domestic growth if we are to recover," the source said.

These difficulties were resolved by the creation of a number of special statutory vehicles that, critically, will keep the investment off the national balance sheet.
