The Irish Mail on Sunday may be blowing the whole paying for a train ticket thing out of proportion. Most people at one time or another have jumped on to a train or bus without having a ticket...
    Silly season.
Come on Senator ...it was a fare cop!: ‘Fare-dodger’ walked past three separate warnings to buy a ticket

It is a very small story but Healey-Eames is dragging it out by not paying the fine.

    good man yourself Fergus!

Government TD defends €100,000 Nama salaries to developers
O'Dowd claimed that it would be a lot more expensive for the State if receivers were to be appointed instead.

"The assets have to be managed in the best interests of the taxpayer and the State," he said.

"The alternative to certain developers, and not all of them - I think it's only developers who actually fully and absolutely compliant - is to put in receivers who would be far more expensive, and if Nama is satisfied that they have transparency and accountability from the developers concerned - and they’re not actually paying them but I accept that the money is coming out of the accounts of the company - if that is in the interests of the State, that is the most efficient way to do it."
Amazing that being in government can completely change one's opinion. Does O'Dowd no longer think Developers should be investigated, and instead receive lerge salaries?

    Fergus O'Dowd (Louth, Fine Gael)

How many of the 50 top builders involved in NAMA appeared before the Mahon tribunal? If any are condemned, will we bail them out? Corruption lies at the heart of this matter and we need a new way of doing business if we are to offer hope instead of despair and jobs instead of jobseeker's allowance
FG, of course, offered Hope and Change back in those days

A change of Government is needed if these changes are to take place. The Green Party has the option of walking away from Fianna Fáil and causing an election. We need a mandate for the future and people are crying out for change, but they will not get it if this Government continues to stick together. At the margins of our constituencies, people are losing their jobs and their hope because the Government has no credibility. In the name of God, it is time for the Government to go. We must have a general election so that the people can decide. They will choose to get rid of Fianna Fáil and, if Green Party Members want to go down with the ship, let them. This side of the House believes it offers a credible alternative and new hope.

Fine Gael has created a constructive stimulus package, which Deputy Coveney has outlined for the Government. We must offer hope and change. The new green economy which we propose will create over 100,000 jobs given a Government with the determination, conviction and idealism to make the necessary changes. Clearly, however, the Government lacks these attributes.

    NPRF being raided again

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin will announce a multibillion-euro stimulus programme for the economy this week, the Sunday Independent has learned.

It comes in the wake of the banking deal at an EU summit and the introduction of the Insolvency Bill.

Ministers are remaining tight-lipped about what will be seen a major coup but one top-level source told this newspaper it would be "a multibillion-euro package involving an initial additional €2bn investment in infrastructural projects".
The fund will be sourced from the European Investment Bank and €750m will come from the National Pension Reserve Fund, with the balance coming from private-public finance and the proceeds from the sale of State assets, such as the National Lottery licence.
Top political figures were anxious to confirm the money is additional capital spending. One said: "It's new, as distinct from a re-announcement of old packages."

They added that the projects involved had been promised "but they were at the bottom of the list; this additional spending means they go to the top of the list and are started as quickly as possible".
"The troika are still obsessed with debt and the balance sheet but were bluntly told by Brendan Howlin that we urgently need to accelerate domestic growth if we are to recover," the source said.

These difficulties were resolved by the creation of a number of special statutory vehicles that, critically, will keep the investment off the national balance sheet.

    A couple of Sunday paper tweets from Frank Fitzgibbon of the ST;
Sadly, none of the Sunday papers to hand have found Peter Darragh Quinn but there is plenty of speculation about where he might be...
PDQ is variously "estranged" from the Quinn family, "in dispute" with the Quinn family and feeling "the strain" worse than rest of family
ST reveals that if Peter Darragh is driving a car to escape the law then he's in breach of a one-year driving ban...
Sindo has pix of sean Quinn Jr's wife visiting him in the Joy. What's the German for schadenfreude again?
ST also has interview with Joan who promises to tax child benefit for any parent earning €100k or more.
Sindo excited at prospect of alleged twist in tale of Lowry, O'Brien and Doncaster Rovers property...
I'd tell you what the twist is but the Sindo merely speculates that the unknown info could be a "smoking gun" not available to tribunal
ST has good detail on the verbal dressing down that Lucinda gave James Reilly over his views on abortion legislation...
Sindo says Rosanna Davison is going to Mauritius on her family hols this year - despite call to boycott the island
SunTimes: Mick Clifford has a right cut at the hypocrisy surrounding Irish political and media reaction to the McAreavey case and those pix
hat reminds me, ST reports Ian Bailey wrote to Shatter to complain gardai refusing to co-operate with GSOC inquiry into his alleged framing

Trying to follow the thread of a John Drennan article is like trying to follow a thread of spider-silk through a furze bush so I'm not entirely sure if he's trying to acquaint us with a fact or regale us with his wit when he says that since the flower-pot affair the media are kept away from Gump with a 'safety rope'.

A 'how to' book for devotees of 50 Shades of Grey has been published.

The Irish version suggests that the most painful thing a sadist can do to a partner is demand that they withdraw €20 from Ulster Bank.

Being incompetent as a politician doesn't mean you're incompetent at everything. Michael McDowell for example, is highly regarded as a barrister.

The Sindo will be revealing the Puppet masters tomorrow

    - The inner circle of Government, the kitchen cabinet, sometimes referred to as the courtiers of the bedchamber, are put under the spotlight in the Sunday Independent this weekend in a special feature written by our top team - John Drennan, Brendan O’Connor, Anne Harris, Daniel McConnell, Maeve Sheehan and Jody Corcoran.

The Brits are all focussing on the Olympics. Now would be a great time to slip a few bad news stories out
