I'm entirely unsurprised, you could see it coming a decade or more ago. The DUP were rapidly becoming more professional, organised, pragmatic and the home of choice for ambitious young unionists; while the UUP were reacting to the threat of the modern world by retreating into the 17th century. Bunch of embittered bigoted old men clinging to their sashes and shaking their canes at the moon.

It really seems that there is no misfortune which could befall the DUP which would result in Unionists turning back to the UU.

Speaking of ''clinging to sashes' and ''embittered old men'' a recent poll showed that 50% of the Orange Order membership still believes that all Catholics are IRA sympathisers.

I think the sash brigade may have brought about the demise of the Ulster Unionist party leadership.

McNarry got the road, Lord Maginness of Golden Dragon Knockout followed and now Nesbitt has stripped John McCallister of his job as deputy leader.

McCallister's crime was to voice his concerns at the party easing towards Unionist unity.

He said such a move would deprive voters of choice and entrench tribal politics.

Nesbitt is now 'considering' whether the party needs a deputy leader.

Oh dear!

It's only a week since the party's conference when Nesbitt proclaimed, 'We're a party for all'.

McCallister is a gentleman whose rejection of petty tribalism deserves much better.

Nesbitt is a deluded tool who can't see that MCallister's warning is very real.
