I accept that Gregory was elected to Dublin Central as an Independent and specifically looked after Dublin Central. Unlike most constituencies, there were levels of deprivation in Dublin Central when he was elected that did not exist anywhere else in the country thorough decades of wanton neglect by successive governments of all hues.

I just read about this, and it is utterly disturbing and shocking. Seven people, who are mentally unwell, and in a long-term hostel in which they want to stay, as a "family unit," it seems are to be turfed out.
Where will they go ?
What has happened to the people in the AIDs ward in Dublin who were likewise put out of their place?
The numbers of homeless people on the streets, most of them pysically sick or depressed, seem likely to increase to a US scale if this is kept up.

http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland...ng-211035.htmlA Government TD has accused campaigners marching today against proposed changes to the West Cork ambulance service of "reckless scaremongering".
Jim Daly, a Fine Gael TD for Cork South West, launched his blistering attack last night as the West Cork SOS group finalised plans for the four-day march from Skibbereen to Cork University Hospital (CUH).
"I have examined the proposals by the HSE in great detail and I am fully confident that these changes will lead to improved response times to emergencies, an increase in the number of paramedics working in West Cork, and a superior transport system for patients," Mr Daly said.
The proposed charges will ensure no paramedic has to work a 17-hour shift, which led to an ambulance crash last week, he added.

Not a cut in a direct service to patients but something that could have an impact on patient care - The Matter hospital wants staff to wash their own scrubs. The effect on the rate of hospital borne infections can't be predicted precisely but it surely won't come as a surprise if a low temperature, economy wash in a domestic washing machine fails to kill off MRSA and other nasties.

Interesting one here.
Minister for Health James Reilly is breaking the law and rejecting international human rights principles by failing to remove an upper age limit to an allowance for people with disabilities, according to a report by Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly.
She says the failure of his department to make a mobility allowance available to people older than 66 “raises fundamental questions about the strength of our commitment to international human rights norms”.http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/...reaking12.htmlThe department originally promised last year to review the mobility allowance scheme but is now saying it cannot afford to make the changes recommended by the ombudsman.
Implementing these would “ignore the very serious financial constraints” on the State and “create liabilities that the State could not afford”, department secretary general Ambrose McLoughlin said in a letter this week.
The report says the department has been operating a scheme for the past 12 years on the basis of a condition that was illegal and that it has known to be illegal for the past four years. Despite having agreed last year to remove the upper age limit from the scheme, it failed to do so. As a consequence, it has knowingly allowed the scheme to continue in operation on the basis of an illegality.

more on this here http://www.ombudsman.gov.ie/en/News/...be-Equal-.html
The Ombudsman, Emily O'Reilly, has today, Monday 25 July 2011, published her report, "Too Old to be Equal? The Ombudsman's investigation discovered that the inclusion of an upper age limit in the scheme was in breach of the Equal Status Act 2000. The Ombudsman also discovered that the Department has known for a number of years that the scheme is discriminatory. In 2008, the Equality Authority found that a woman had been discriminated against under a similar scheme, the Motorised Transport Grant, when she was refused a grant as she was over 66 years of age. Despite the fact that the Mobility Allowance Scheme has been in breach of the Equal Status Act since 2000 the Department has not displayed any sense of urgency in amending the scheme.
During the Ombudsman's investigation the Department apologised for its actions and agreed to authorise a retrospective payment to the woman who, sadly, is now deceased.
