Fukushima’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), on Friday detected record radiation levels in a duct that connects reactor buildings and an external ventilation pipe. Radiation found near the steel pipe connecting reactor buildings could kill anyone exposed to it in 20 minutes, local media reported.

This is the highest level ever detected outside the reactor buildings, according to local broadcaster NHK. Earlier TEPCO said radiation levels of at least 10 Sieverts per hour were found on the pipe.

A specially developed robot was finally sent in to one of the reactors this month to take a look. It got fried in three hours.

With Chernobyl, they have just encased what is left, not solved it long term.

Japan faces 200-year wait for Fukushima clean-up The chief of the Fukushima nuclear power station has admitted that the technology needed to decommission three melted-down reactors does not exist, and he has no idea how it will be developed.
In a stark reminder of the challenge facing the Japanese authorities, Akira Ono conceded that the stated goal of decommissioning the plant by 2051 may be impossible without a giant technological leap. “There are so many uncertainties involved. We need to develop many, many technologies,” Mr Ono said. “For removal of the debris, we don’t have accurate information [about the state of the reactors] or any viable methodology"

Public money is being used for the clean up, but the company seems to be using it with little oversight, and according to the zerohedge report, 1.8 billion dollars have been wasted so far.

In fairness, given the task and conditions they are facing, it's small wonder that they have seemingly wasted money on containment efforts.

There does seem to not be enough accountability and transparency, but the waste of money angle is exaggerated given the extreme unchartered territory they're facing.

From my experience of dealing with Japanese companies, I'd say they are not good at thinking on the hoof and definitely have a hierarchical management structure lacking in lateral thinking.

Yes, I take your point that it is an appallingly difficult situation.

Critical feedback from the bottom up would not be the strongest feature of the organisation, perhaps.
