Always assuming of course that the theft wasn't carried out by someone with a master key and a uniformed background. Its now been some five days and no-one at the Revenue has as far as I am aware confirmed whether information on live revenue casework has been lost or not.

    Suspcious statement betting odds

2/1 'The Revenue Commissioners do not comment on confidential cases' (we've lost it all)
5/1 'Gardai have requested that we do not comment further at this time' (we don't know whether we've got it backed up or not yet)
8/1 'We think it was just some young lads messin' about (we've a very good idea we know who is behind it)
10/1 'The Gardai have some strong leads and we are working with them to recover the equipment' (lets not mention the data)
50/1 'The data was backed up and nothing was lost. We are working closely with Gardai on definite leads.' (some gobshyte dealer thinks if he nicks the computer thats the end of it.)

Here is the statement from the Revenue re stolen laptops. It was issued on the 28th Jan'11.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/press/2011/...1-laptops.html

The Office of the Revenue Commissioners can confirm that last night (27/01/2011) there was a break in at their offices on the Navan Road in Dublin. Intruders gained entry to the offices at 7.15 pm through an emergency fire door which was forced. The matter was immediately reported to An Garda Siochana.

Ten laptops, which were chained and padlocked to desks, were stolen during the break in. As a matter of policy, Revenue's laptops are encrypted using a leading brand that complies with the highest international security certifications. An Garda Síochana and Revenue Officers have reviewed camera surveillance footage and Revenue will continue to work closely with An Garda Síochana in relation to their investigation.

Revenue contacted the Office of the Data Protection Commissioners first thing this morning to report the incident and will be working closely with the Commissioner's Office in the coming days.

    The plot thickens

A LAPTOP containing banking and personal information has been stolen from the home of Anglo Irish Bank chief executive Mike Aynsley.

The theft is being investigated by gardai, the Irish Independent has learned.

Three hooded males were captured on CCTV breaking into Mr Aynsley's south Dublin home in broad daylight in mid-November. Detectives have been unable to trace the thieves and the laptop remains missing.

The files on the computer were not encrypted, but did have password protection.
Details of the theft were kept under wraps as Anglo's security personnel tried to assess what information was contained on the stolen computer.

They concluded that while the laptop held banking and personal information, including around 70 emails, none of the material could be deemed "sensitive" in nature and none of it related to customers.

Nevertheless, the Data Commissioner, Billy Hawkes, was advised of the theft.

If the laptops were not Revenue laptops, this is meaningless

    Well, well, well....

Revenue’s customs officials also work closely with the Garda Criminal Assets Bureau (Cab) and investigating officers believe the laptops were deliberately targeted in a bid to disrupt criminal investigations.
Had the laptops not been recovered, it would not have jeopardised investigations into criminal activity at the Revenue, according to another Garda source. “But this is a new development in terms of what criminal gangs are willing to do in terms of taking on the Stare,” added the source. Detectives believe that the criminals had some degree of insider information in order to be able to carry out the break-in and theft.

Three men forced their way in through a fire emergency door at the side of the building at around 7.15pm on January 27th. The offices are patrolled by security guards and monitored by surveillance cameras.

The burglars, who were captured on CCTV but had their faces covered, made their way unnoticed up to the second floor, where they used cutting equipment to remove 10 laptops that had been chained and padlocked to desks.
