Interesting. Indo to go paywall next year.
INM said it plans to begin charging for its online content in Ireland in the first half of 2013.

The Mail & Guardian is advertising for a Social Media Editor to be based in Johannesburg. The ad is very similar to the one the IT had here recently for the post that was filled by David Coughlan. There is a lighter touch though to the M&G ad in a couple of places:

The long list of desirable qualities includes

‘Has a Google+ account, but isn't sure why'
'Thinks email is so, like, last year'

    Applicants are advised-

"You can also tweet @verashni, but don't say anything embarrassing or sycophantic.

Employment equity candidates will be preferred, but don't bother boycotting us over it – we're not Woolworths."

(Woolworths is the Marks and Spencers of South Africa and has featured in some discrimination cases in the past.)

It seems the Irish edition of the Star published the Kate Middleton pictures and the BBC is getting into a tizzy about it. Gawd help us....
The Republic of Ireland edition of the Irish Daily Star has published photos of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless while on holiday in France.

Its editor, Mike O'Kane, said he treated the duchess as he would any other worldwide celebrity.
The Dublin-based tabloid is a joint venture between Northern & Shell - publisher of the UK Daily Star - and Ireland's Independent News and Media.

In a statement, the owners of Northern & Shell said they "abhor" the Irish Daily Star's decision to publish the photographs and "very much regret the distress it has caused".

Oops, Star editor Michael O'Kane is not going to enjoy a quiet Saturday evening...
Mimi Turner, group communications director for Northern and Shell, said the group "abhors" the decision to publish "these intrusive pictures".
"We, like St James' Palace, believe [them] to be a grotesque invasion of their privacy," she said. "The Irish Daily Star is a joint venture with Independent News & Media over which we have no editorial control. We were not given advance notive of the decision to publish these pictures by their management and we are consulting with our lawyers as a matter of urgency over what we believe to be a serious breach of their contract."
She added: "Northern & Shell is profoundly dismayed at the decision to made by Irish Daily Star, which would never have been made by any of the newspapers or magazines under our editorial control. We consider all aspects of privacy very carefully and would never condone this action."

Just when you thought the silly season was over. Apparently the Irish Star's decision to publish topless pictures of Kate Middleton is the most important news in the Anglo speaking world tonight

Not so silly season after all. This could be the end of the Irish Star:
Newspaper owner Richard Desmond took steps on Saturday to close the Irish Daily Star, as he reacted angrily to its publication of the topless pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing while on holiday in France.

The paper had been condemned by St James Palace after it ran 13 pictures of the duchess along with an image of French Closer magazine, which first published the pictures on its front cover.

Desmond is convinced he has the power to shut down the whole operation, given that he owns the British title. Insiders believe he has already instructed lawyers to begin the necessary legal action to terminate publication. Its website remained down on Saturday evening. Desmond's company, Northern & Shell, co-owns the Irish Daily Star with the Dublin-based Independent News & Media (INM).

At 7pm tonight, Desmond told Media Week: "I am very angry at the decision to publish these photographs and am taking immediate steps to close down the joint venture. The decision to publish these pictures has no justification whatever and Northern & Shell condemns it in the strongest possible terms." Source

Star Goes Tits Up ... would be my headline if I had a tabloid mind .... is 'tabloid mind' an oxymoron?

It'll return with a more pliant 'editor'. I'm just surprised that someone admitted ownership of the 'newspaper'!
