Fiction is not ruled out, bty.

Gareth Peirce, lawyer to the Guildford 4, has a book out which would be well worth a read ( I have a read a little of a friend's copy). It is a collection of 4 essays which basically calls her country to account. One of the essays is on the treatment of the Irish:

Hi Sam. I recently heard Ishmael Reed plug his latest book on the radio. I don't know if its any good but the title is so blunt & startling that it could be a fascinating read:

"Barack Obama and the Jim Crow Media: The Return of the Nigger Breakers"

I've always been a big fan of Gareth Pierce so this one is very tempting to me. Read a brilliant article by her not too long ago in the LRB dealing with the Lockerbie case. The book might not be readily available this side of the Atlantic, however, which would pose a problem for me. I will look into it.

    Keep the suggestions coming, folks.

I am sure. Lots of insight into the teabagger mentality, no doubt. Would it be readily available in Ireland?

I'd read this too. I sounds do-able and worth doing. Read the article on Lockerbie at the time of the release of the "bomber" and there is a thread somewhere on it - covered in white powder.

What about Fintan O'Toole- Enough is Enough. It's inexpensive, relatively short and full of talking points?

I had the great pleasure of meeting her over Christmas. She is a wonderful woman and surprisingly humble. I was pre-warned not to tell her how a great she is is as she would be embarrassed.

If you cant get it, can you arrange for someone here to get it and post it to you.

Are there any funny political books? We might be in need of some comic relief.

Fraxinus mentions reading something by Steve Biko that sounds interesting.

It ain't new but 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' would fit the bill.

    Irish connection too.

Not funny but 'The Merthyr Rising' by Gwyn A Williams would maybe interest our friends in Wales?

    Both excellent reads IMHO.
