For anyone around - student or non-student - there will be protests next Wednesday to resist further fees. Young people - hit hardest by the recession - also face being locked out of third level education.

[EDIT: Might actually require a general student activism thread for any students on here]

We should send students to Scotland. Tis free there for EU citizens

Scotland is breaking the law by charging students from elsewhere in the UK for university degrees while undergraduates from Scotland and the EU get their education free, according to a leading human rights lawyer.

Students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland are currently charged between £1,820 and £2,895 per year to study for a Scottish university degree – a sum that could increase to up to £9,000 from next year.

But under EU rules, students coming to Scotland from other European countries cannot be charged tuition fees because they have to be treated in the same way as Scottish students.

Talk now of TCD & UCD leaving the USI due to dissatisfaction with the fees campaign and the 78k annual membership.

Action so far has obviously been ineffective and the Union has its fair share of FF/FG running the show but ffs taking the ball and going home?

I am astonished that the one and only expert on 'Who goes to College', namely Dr Patrick Clancy of UCD is not on this panel . I have never met him, but his research has been sterling. Explaining the advantages of certain socio-economic groups in terms of access to higher education or grants, he really is the only person worth interviewing.

    Dr Ed Walsh? Nonsense

Ed seems to think that student loans for all are the way to go. Claims that they have increased higher level participation in Australia and New Zealand where they were recently introduced.
I'd like to know a lot more about it before I'd take his word for it.

The have created a gargantuan debt burden in the US that is being compared with sub prime mortgage debt.
