Default "Nicky Kelly May Leave Labour for ULA"

The Sunday Times today is reporting that Nicky Kelly, a Labour Councillor who stood for election for Labour (narrowly beaten by Mildred Fox), may seek to stand as an Independent or for the ULA.

He has accused Labour officials on acting anti-democratically when town councillor Bernie O'Halloran retired and was replaced by Una Kelly after an interview but no vote was held. He suggests that the Labour Party officials wanted a process that favoured "dynastic candidates" - Liz McManus's son and a son of Liam Kavanagh, a former TD, were elected.

Kelly withdrew from the selection process and says he is now talking to the local ULA members and to Maureen O'Sullivan Independent TD.

Kelly was pardoned by the President after serving a long sentence for the Sallins Train Robbery.

If its an anti-dynasty stance (and I have no reason to believe otherwise) then fair play to him. Partys need to be democratic from the roots up. If they have a local party organisation then decisions need to be taken at that level, otherwise switch to a list system!!!

He lost any credibility when he joined Labour.

Did he have any before that ? Didn't he operate as a traditional broker/clientelist politician from the outset of his career as a councillor ?

I think you are probably right as I poke around in the debris of destroyed brain cells that are alleged to constitute my memory.

There was a councillor down that way called Brian Rees if I recollect rightly who seemed sound. Is he still about? Maybe he will run as an independent.

He couldn't be that active so. You seem to have your finger on the pulse.

From what I can see on the internet, he seems to be a former councillor, associated maybe with the IRSP ?
