Thread: Superquinn Closes in Naas, Tesco Opens

  1. #1

Default Superquinn Closes in Naas, Tesco Opens

In another example of the displacement of irish workers by foreigners, Superquinn has announced the closure of its Naas outlet.

    http://www.independent.ie/business/i...e-2487661.html

Last November, Brian Cowen attended the opening of a new Tesco in Naas. The Tesco store stays open 24hrs a day, making workers work unnecessarily odd and unhealthy hours. Based on my observations Tesco employ less irish people as a proportion of their workforce than Superquinn. They appear to be using migrant work visas to bring cheap labour from outside the EU, when there are 450,000 irish on the dole.

How is it possible to tell if someone is Irish by observation?

Can't see tesco being able to pay less than the minimum wage to any employee in Ireland, no matter what their nationality

Your false concern for the odd and unhealthy hours employees would have to work is also misplaced

There are many workplaces that run 24 hours a day
Hospitals, care homes, guards, etc etc
Even supermarkets that don't open 24 hours a day, sometimes have staff working in them 24/7
I stacked shelves in a supermarket from 8pm to 8am, never did me' a bit of harm

Thread fail, try harder next time, might have been nice to have a discussion about the benefit/advantage of having an Irish supermarket as opposed to a British one. The racism displayed in your op has now prevented that

Do you have information which shows that workers are being forced to work for 24 hours or other such amounts of time? If so what categorises 'unnecesarily odd' working times? Also, what evidence have you that that Tesco employ less irish people and what proportion of the workers who are employed by Tesco who aren't Irish come from outside the EU- also, what percentage difference is there between the number of non-EU workers in Tesco and that in Superquinns? Or is the premise of this thread the fact that one Irish owned chain of rip-off merchants was replaced by one less expensive British owned supermarket.

I didnt say theyre undercutting the min wage. Im raising the point that the government should not be granting visas for jobs that can easily be filled from within the 26 states of the EU. Theres simply no need to recruit in India. There is no need for the migrant work visa scheme to be still running.

An employer recruiting outside the EU must be doing so for some particular reason. I will go into that in a later post.

There is no need for Tesco to be open in the small hours. Theres loads of scientific evidence that working ¨graveyard shift¨ is detrimental to health.

¨Underperforming¨ staff will be put on graveyard shift to encourage them to resign. Its a staff managment tactic.

I stacked shelves in a supermarket from 8pm to 8am, never did me' a bit of harm
Thats the reasoning of a simpleton. Many health problems are incremental and cumulative.

I stacked shelves so I'm a simpleton? Charming

Where is your evidence that they are recruting outside the EU, You said 'cheap labour', therefore defacto you were claiming that that the wage for a non EU National in Ireland would be less, that for an Irish or Non EU National... I'm glad to see that when challenged on this, by a simpleton, you have now backtracked, What does that say about you if a simpleton has educated you?
The Graveyard Shift is not exclusive to tecso
Regarding Staff Management Tactics, Staff management of who or what company?

No, I said your reasoning was the problem, not your former job.

    "Irish by observation"

Would you like to elaborate ? Are you talking about citizenship here ?

Obviously you have difficulty with detail, so Ill just say that whats coming down the track for this country is going to hit people like you, like a freight train. Your wages will be reduced to globally competitive rates, ie chinese rates. Your conditions will be impossible to bear, you will be reduced to a serf. Good luck to you. You will only have yourself to blame.

I do. I just want you to clarify how you can tell if someone is Irish by observation. I am asking because it seems to me you are spouting nonsense.

Wages would be falling anyway as a result of the governments internal devaluation policies, not because of rafts of immigrants arriving to take up jobs packing shelves in Tesco. If you're afraid of worsening conditions and low pay, join a trade union and get involved involved in the struggle to do something about it.
