I read that this new "country" is the size of Texas. I wonder how many people live there.

Africa continues to be carved up like a pie by the big powers .

    No one knows for sure.

Wrestling, as a matter of interest, is the most popular sport. It is like the GAA in Ireland but a little bit less tribal.

Texas is correct - or France. That might mean more to you Europeans.

8.5 million seems to be the least number of people living there.

The annual military budget is $700 million. That is more than the budget for education, health care, electricity, roads and industry .... combined.

There are fewer than 500 trained doctors. There exists about 50 Kilometers of paved road. Illiteracy is 80% male and 92% female.

It produces loads of oil. ABout 375,000 barrels a day.

Default Maidir Le: South Sudan Referendum and Statehood - Update - Oil War in South Sudan

    Well that didn't take long.

War has started. South Sudan invaded an oil rich area of Sudan. Sudan bombed an oil plant yesterday.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/21/wo...-oil-area.html

Sudan claimed Friday that its military had been victorious in forcing South Sudanese soldiers to pull out of a contested oil region as tensions between the two African neighbors remained high.

In a defiant speech at a rally in the capital, President Omar Hassan al-Bashir labeled South Sudanese leaders as “insects” and dismissed their statements that they were voluntarily withdrawing troops from the disputed Heglig oil field. “We thought these people wanted peace,” Mr. Bashir cried out in Green Square here. Thousands of people gathered in the square late on Friday evening to celebrate the announcement that after taking over Heglig last week the South Sudanese were ceding the territory to respond to international demands.

The United States, the United Nations and the African Union all condemned South Sudan for sending troops into Heglig last week and bringing the two countries to the brink of war. But South Sudan, which calls the area Pantho, said it considered the area part of the south.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration, an international organization, ruled in 2009 that Heglig was outside the borders of the contested area of Abyei that lies between Sudan and South Sudan, and thus belonged to the government in Khartoum.

A state of emergency has been declared in the Sudan.

Yesterday, four foreign special ops. were arrested, including a British soldier.

According to this journalist the leaders of South Sudan have personally pocketed some 10 billion of the country's Oil Revenue. Could that actually be possible?

While not wanting to overrely on the BBC, is sounds pretty bad all around.

Famine declared. Half the population said to be at risk. Maybe 4 to 5 million people.

I who hope those who supported the creation of this ludicrous entity for their pecuniary interests fly to the rescue. Maybe Trump will take a few refugees. After all the reptile in charge expresses his love for the US by going around in a cowboy hat given to him by George Bush.

You couldn't make this stuff up ...

It's worth reading the article I posted previously: "Hunger, disease and 10 billion missing ..."

The UN is now telling us that 20 million people in South Sudan, parts of Kenya, Yemen, and Somalia are "food insecure" and facing death by starvation.

The worst crisis since 1945 they say.

This is caused by destabilisation and war: Africom, Al Q and all the usual suspects crawling over the Continent.

The UN urges "a political solution". What if what is happening is someone's political solution ?
