Default Irish Rail Fail Celebrated !

Once again failure is celebrated in Ireland

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0329/rail.html

The Limerick to Galway rail line has been officially reopened, with trains travelling between the two cities for the first time in 34 years.

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey attended the official departure of the first service from Limerick at 10.30am.

The re-opening of the rail link comes after €160m has been spent on upgrading the Ennis to Athenry line.
I heard on the radio this morning that the Journey time would be up to 2hr30m

I thought, that cant be correct so I checked the distance, from Limerick to Galway is 65 miles

Then I checked with Irish Fail and they confirmed, yes 2hr30m

How can a rail line that cost €160,000,000.00 operate at an average speed of 26 mph

    26 mph - Irish FAIL

€2,460,000.00 per mile for a 26 mph rail line ???

The Germans build high speed lines (ICE) for €1,000,000

WTF is wrong with Irish Fail?

    Oh ****

Its even worse than I thought

The €160,000,000.00 was spent on the track from Athenty to Ennis

that makes it even MORE expensive

they should have paved it and made a cycle track out of it

Its surprisingly popular here in Galway. The local breakfast radio show pretty much echoed your OP but the station was deluged with texts and emails in support of the project. It may be a response to actually having a brand new piece of Infrastructure built in the West of Ireland, a once in a Lifetime event.(And only if you live a long life).

I suspect that peoples enthusiasm will wane when they begin using the service. 2 1/2 hours for a trip to Limerick is rather crap. Dont forget that this is Athenry to Limerick, not even Galway city. It will get worse when the Gort-Crusheen section of the M18 is finished later this year, meaning that the Majority of the Galway-Limerick route will be served by a Motorway.

The most disappointing aspect of this for me is what the Rail line leaves out. Taking the Western Rail Corridor as a whole, there are Airports in Sligo, Knock, Galway and of course Shannon. How Cool and useful would it have been to be able to hop on a train to an International Airport in the West of Ireland? But no, Good planning and common sense were left at the door and once again we paid far, far more than we should have for a second rate piece of Infrastructure.

Great idea, Terrible implementation. Whats new.....
The first robot president won by exactly one vote. Ah, yes! John Quincy Adding Machine. He struck a chord with the voters when he pledged not to go on a killing spree. But, like most politicians he promised more than he could deliver.

Brendan thanks for that, great post and honest info.

These are things I wouldn't/couldn't have known.

Yeah, there are a lot of magpies in this land of ours, they are easily impressed by shiny new things and don't bother to get under the hood

Local company to provide marquees for rail corridor launch
    Galway Advertiser, March 18, 2010.

Galway based marquee company, Magnum Marquee Hire, has been successful in tendering for the contract to provide marquees and temporary structures for the launch of the Western Rail Corridor on Monday March 29.

The company will erect its marquees at Athenry Railway Station, Craughwell Railway Station, Gort Railway Station, and Sixmilebridge Railway Station for the launch, along with a large celebratory marquee at Ennis Railway Station.

Magnum Marquee Hire boasts a client list which includes Celestica, the Western Regional Fisheries Board, NUIG, Galway City Council, Tullamore Show, and the National Ploughing Championships.

“We are glad to be working with Irish Rail on this special day,” company director Kevin Nugent said. “The Western Rail Corridor was a long time in the pipeline and now that the dream has become a reality, Magnum Marquee Hire is delighted to be involved. Most importantly, we are delighted that Irish Rail has chosen a Galway based marquee supplier, keeping their business local in these tough times.”

The popularity can only be judged by usage. The bus is quicker.
