Silvio Berlusconi's trial for bribing the British lawyer David Mills has failed to reach a verdict after judges ruled that the statute of limitations has run out on the case.
Prosecutors had requested that the former Italian prime minister serve five years for allegedly paying $600,000 (£380,000) to Mills, the estranged husband of former Labour cabinet minister Tessa Jowell, to withhold evidence on his behalf in two trials in the 1990s. Berlusconi denied the charges.

Berlusconi goes down

A Milan court ruled that former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is guilty of tax evasion, sentencing him to four years in prison.

The verdict comes two days after Mr. Berlusconi, 76, announced he will not run for premier in upcoming elections. The three-time premier stepped down last November after Italy came under mounting market pressure to deal with its high debt load and Mr. Berlusconi failed to come up with persuasive financial reforms.

Prosecutors had argued Mr. Berlusconi and others were behind a scheme to purchase the rights to broadcast U.S. movies on Mr. Berlusconi's private television networks through a series of offshore companies and had falsely declared the payments to avoid taxes.

Three former Berlusconi aides are accused of procuring the underage girl at the centre of the whole storm, Karima El-Mahroug as well as other girls for prostitution.

According to the first testimony from El-Mahrough, Silvio’s private disco featured showgirls dressed up as nuns, nurses and one dressed up as US president Barack Obama. Another was dressed up as a prominent Milan prosecutor who Berli has accused of persecuting him.
