In Ireland’s definitive Rich List, the Sunday Independent documents the 300 wealthiest people in Ireland and their associated fortunes. It details the big winners of 2009, who they are, what they’re worth and how they reached the top.

The Sunday Independent Rich List also details the losers of 2009 who saw their fortunes hit when Ireland’s booming economy bottomed.

During one of the most tumultuous economic climates the country has witnessed in decades, many of Ireland’s business tycoons saw their wealth diminish as billions of euro disappeared into a black hole of debt.

Anyone want to make some predictions as to the winners and losers?

How do they define rich is a more important question....

Those Rich Lists are a load of nonsense. They do it based on estimations of property values which they know the person to hold and prominent shareholdings they know them to have by way of the public share register of a company. They take no account of debt (which is key), because they can't get access to it and a large proportion of the assumptions are simply inaccurate.

One's financial wealth is their assets minus their liabilities. All these idiotic lists have been telling those who have an interest in them over the past decade is what the assets of people are worth. All coming home to roost now.

There are plenty of them in Ireland but most are discreet enough not to appear on these Richlists at all.

Very true, no money could make one any richer if they have health, happiness and a quality single malt.

Despite the carnage wreaked by the financial crisis and recession, the wealthiest 300 Irish people are worth close to €50bn, according to the findings of the Sunday Independent Ireland's Rich List published this week. That's about the same as the GDP of Bulgaria.

The Senate is not short of businessmen with substantial property and share portfolios and [] will do little to dispel the popular belief that they are part-time politicians. Fianna Fail's Donie Cassidy once again leads the charge in the declaration of members' interests in the upper house. According to the latest register of Senate members' interests, which is due for publication on Monday, Mr Cassidy had extensive property, share and land holdings around the country.

Looks to me like banks and property are good investments - if the list of Senators interests is anything to go by!
