So what's your best guess Indiana?

Reported in the Wall Street Journal’s REVIEW & OUTLOOK on “Why China Hates NMD” (America’s Nuclear Missile Shield)
“ - If Chinese leaders [ .. ] decide to use force to take over [Taiwan] their "renegade province" under any scenario they will need to establish air and sea superiority. That is impossible if American aircraft carriers take up positions in the Taiwan Strait. And so neutralizing America's will to fight with nuclear threats is a top priority.

China has given the U.S. a taste of such threats. In 1995 Chinese General Xiong Guangkai told an American envoy, "In the end, you care more about Los Angeles than you do about Taipei." This year [2000] an official newspaper, the Liberation Army Daily, warned that a defense of Taiwan could lead to missile attacks on the U.S. - ”

In 2010 there were two Chinese Cyber attacks on US assets; one in March, and again in April when communications between the US Senate, the White House, NASA, The US Army and other agencies were sidetracked to China and kept for twenty minutes.

In October 2006 a Chinese submarine “stalked” a U.S. aircraft carrier and approached within firing range without being detected. In January 2008, a Chinese submarine followed the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk in the Taiwan Strait but was detected and monitored with antisubmarine aircraft. Analysts say that in the future China could be able to approach an aircraft carrier and possibly sink it with a missile.

US and South Korea are scheduled to do naval exercises in the Yellow Sea in December; China has warned the US that the Yellow Sea is their territorial waters.

China, as of 2010, has nuclear submarines proven capable of launching nuclear tipped missiles.

The single nozzle contrail over the Pacific going north and parallel to the coast of California was just outside American territorial waters, which extend to 12 miles. China claims all waters within 200 miles as being within their sphere of influence.

My best guess is that the appearance of the contrail of questionable origin was response by China to our activities in their "sphere of influence."
