It will bring wind damage flooding and snow at the same time depending on location

It may take until Thursday for this thing to clear out. Here’s a comprehensive weather report for the DC area. I just hope the power holds.

Thanks Bernadette and CF for the well wishes. As of 11AM EST storm had strengthened but was still 250 miles offshore moving at 10-15 miles per hour.
DC is 100 miles in from the ocean so we wont see the worst. Peak is expected overnight tonight. Not to tempt fate, but so far I’ve experienced worse on a wet weekend in Kinnegad.

11:05 a.m.: As expected, Sandy’s sustained winds have been bumped up to 90 mph and its central pressure has reached 943 mb. The storm continues to strengthen. Reports are coming in that much of Atlantic City is underwater and that this could be worse than the Ash Wednesday storm of 1962.
Some good storm photos just posted over on the In Focus thread.

When residents of the U.S. Northeast's largest cities wake up Monday morning, they'll have few options other than to stay put at home. Hurricane Sandy's daunting approach has led to an unprecedented preemptive response from officials to bring some of the most densely populated areas of the United States to a virtual standstill.

By 10 p.m. Sunday night, mass transit agencies in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. had announced that trains and buses would not operate Monday, marking the first time in U.S. history such widespread public transportation service suspensions have been announced before the serious part of a storm has even begun.

The closures don't stop with transit. School districts from Virginia to Boston have cancelled classes. The federal government in Washington is closed. The New York Stock Exchange will take a rare day off from trading after Mayor Michael Bloomberg imposed mandatory evacuation zones on parts of Lower Manhattan and Staten Island

Webcams date to an earlier era of the internet: the very first one, in 1991, was pointed at a coffee pot in a computer lab at Cambridge University. But the tradition lives on in various corners of the web, which comes in handy when, say, an enormous storm is barreling toward the East Coast of the United States.
The webcams listed below should provide a good view of Hurricane Sandy’s arrival in New York City, on Long Island, and along the Jersey Shore.

Godzilla is just waiting there off NY. I can feel it. Just wait until the surge gets to 5ft and he'll lep out of the water and endorse someone for the Presidency live across all networks. Hopefully by stamping on both of them.

Goldman Sachs would write the funeral expenses for both off against tax. While lobbying to have the Federal Government pay for the funerals at the same time.

I'm convinced Jaws is going to get washed up on the streets of New York and he'll start walking on his fins eating helpless New Yorkers.

I can almost hear the central knuckle in the head of the republican party machine somewhere in Kickapoo, Wisconsin, straining to find some way of connecting Hurricane Sandy with the Iranian 'Knuckular weepons proh-grahame'.

No doubt we'll all be straining our eyes next week to see the latest NSA overfly of North Western Iran where a million Iranian women have been flapping their spare burquas in an effort to lay waste to the United States.

If the Chinese should choose this moment to all jump and land at the same time Yellowstone could be next with a lava gusher hitherto unknown in the wide, wide world of sports.

Reports are coming in that HMS Bounty, the replica ship used in the movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" with Marlon Brando and afterwards also in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" sank of the coast of North Carolina.
16 crew abandoned the ship after it lost power, and so far 14 have been found by helicopters of the Coastguard. Lets hope they find the other 2 soon.

Storms, Torrential Rain, Snow and Extreme Hail

When questioned about the end of the age, Jesus hints at wild weather:

'There will be ... dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves' (Lk 21.25)

The root meaning of the Greek in this verse can mean nothing else but literal sea and literal waves. The word 'roaring' comes from the Greek 'echeo' meaning 'to make a loud noise'. Hurricanes and coastal flooding spring to mind.

Then there's the future Gog-Magog War. At some point in the future (biblical timing here is uncertain), it seems Iran, together with other Islamic nations, will invade Israel from the north (Ezek 38). But just as God intervened to release Israel from the grips of Pharaoh, so He will intervene to protect Israel from the invading armies. As with Joshua (see above), the weather plays an important part in their defeat:

'... I will rain on him (Gog) and on his troops ... a torrential rain, with hailstones ...' (Ezek 38.22)

Examples of Recent Severe Weather Events

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2011 made new weather records. NOAA announced that there were 12 different weather disasters (see time series chart) that each cost more than $1 billion at the time of the event. The previous record was nine in 2008. Such events included blizzards, wildfires and tornadoes. NOAA claim that the US has sustained 134 weather or climate disasters since 1980 where overall damages reached or exceeded $1 billion (including CPI adjustment to 2012). Scientists blame 'an unlucky combination of global warming and ***** chance'! Using NOAA data some note that during the 1980's the US averaged just 1 billion dollar disaster per year, increasing to 3.8 per year in the 1990's, increasing to 4.6 per year in the next decade.

Reuters claim that such extreme weather events are increasing globally, and global reinsurer Munich RE claims that natural disaster losses for the first 9 months of 2011 totalled $310 billion. It is interesting to note that global weather catastrophes appear to track global warming, and that there is an indication that such events reached a peak in the 1990's. The first decade of the 21st century appears to have fewer catastrophes, possibly because the world climate is showing a cooling trend.

Good news: there is no need to worry! Those who trust in the Lord Jesus Christ are eternally safe in the hands of the living God (Jn 3.16). You do not have to go through the extremes of these end time judgements (the 'wrath' of God). The Bible promises all those who put their trust in Jesus Christ will be exempt from 'the hour of trial that is coming upon the whole world' (Rev 3.10). Many believe that those who trust in Christ will be rescued from what is coming, just like Noah before the flood. Jesus said that at the end of this age:

'... there shall be two men in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left ...'
    (Mat 24.40).

Don't delay, put your trust in Jesus and receive His peace, forgiveness and security in an insecure world. See Steps You Must Take.

Are 17,000 people being deliberately left in the path of Hurricane Sandy?

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg tellingly misinterpreted a reporter’s question during a pre-Sandy press conference Sunday. When asked about what would happen on Rikers Island — New York’s main prison complex – during the storm, Bloomberg responded, “Jails are secure … Don’t worry about anyone getting out.”

He did not consider that the journalist was in fact asking about the well-being of the near 17,000-strong inmate population, incarcerated on water-locked landfill.

In an “urgent call to prayer,” founder of Defend and Proclaim the Faith Ministries and amateur “end times” bible analyst John McTernan has proclaimed that “God is systematically destroying America” for our misdeeds. He’d like you to look at the record. “Just last August, Hurricane Isaac hit New Orleans seven years later, on the exact day of Hurricane Katrina,” he writes ungrammatically. “Both hit during the week of the homosexual event called Southern Decadence in New Orleans!” Strangely, both also hit at the height of hurricane season. COINCIDENCE?

McTernan goes on to explain that “Obama is 100 percent behind the Muslim Brotherhood which has vowed to destroy Israel and take Jerusalem.” But — and here’s the shocking twist — “Both candidates are pro-homosexual and are behind the homosexual agenda.” Clearly a vote for either Obama or Romney is a vote for a FRANKENGAYSTORM.

As an aside: Apparently 'Frankenstorm' has been entered into dictionaries.
