Today is the hottest day so far this year 42C in the shade, and the lovely sea breeze has gone elsewhere. We (a few of the grand children, the missus and myself) spend most of the morning in the sea. Great, it's like a warm bath. Sea temp 26C. Very tolerable indeed, unlike out of the water. No walking here, I'll tell you that much.

Walking is the best exercise there is. Forget pilates and all the rest get out walk briskly, the weight will go and you will see so much more than when you're in the car.
Today is not bad, no rain, yet, and sometimes its sunny. Grand walking weather. I'm going to walk into town.
Enjoy bernadette! I hope it stays good![]()

Family is always welcome, at any time, for however long. And they take serious advantage of that special treatment. 3 grand daughters here since end of May, staying till September 15th.
Family membership applications closed 17 years ago, sorry!![]()

Watching Tony Robinson ( Baldrick) doing a programme on human impacts of historic climate change. Apparently, the onset of the mini ice age in Europe was preceded by a run of really wet summers starting 1315 .... Anyone seeing any parallels 'ere??
Well, history tells us that it did indeed rain excessively in the early 1300's.Watching Tony Robinson ( Baldrick) doing a programme on human impacts of historic climate change. Apparently, the onset of the mini ice age in Europe was preceded by a run of really wet summers starting 1315 .... Anyone seeing any parallels 'ere??
Other similarities?
- France and England both refused to pay off loans made by the great urban banking houses of Italy, which led to financial crisis and collapse in Florence and Sienna. Banking failures disrupted the flow of capital to other merchant enterprises, and worsened the depression that gripped most of Europe's cities in the 1300s.
- Although the wealthy aristocracy continued to live in luxury and seldom went without, hunger remained a constant for the mass of the rural and urban poor.
- The strains of life in the countryside, of hunger, disease, war and death, were made worse by feudal lords' insistance that peasants continue paying high rents and other feudal dues and by the burden of royal taxation.
- ... demanded a huge ransom for this release; the French crown passed this cost along to the peasants in the form of huge tax increases
- ...it is clear that the uprising posed a threat to both the royal government and the aristocrats. The aristocracy therefore joined the government in crushing this threat to their power, and by fall 1358, had drowned the rebellion in blood.
- The rural population was not alone in rising in rebellion during the crisis decades of the 1300s. On several occasions, artisans and the urban poor spontaneously rose in protest against the upper classes (especially the aristocrats), who lived in luxury and used their political power to keep wages low.
- in Germany, the 1300s brought further political fragmentation.

This is just ridiculous. 10.00 am and it's already 39C. Met office says it's going to get hot this afternoon. No ****! Warning for people to stay inside until sunset. Stray dogs in Athens have no problems with this. The fountain on Syntagma Square is their preferred hangout
This was taken at 9.00am this morning...
I was reminded elsewhere that today is St Swithens day...Not that I'm bothered, not a bit. Its glorious here in Mayo today!
I suppose we shouldn't be complaining. Just got a message from a friend living and working in Antalya, SW Turkey. The mercury hit 52C this afternoon! That's a bit too much....
On the phone to my stepdaughter in Toronto this evening. The sound of the electric storm stopped our conversation a couple of times. Horribly hot and humid, and the balconies of her apartment are closed due to reconstruction. She had disconnected everything electrical apart from the phone.
Praise be for our cool temperate climate - well, mostly.. sometimes..kinda... The roses are drooping from the rain. If that were the biggest problem in life it would be pretty good hey?![]()
