This evening has been brilliant in between having a row on another thread I've been in the garden enjoying the most fantastic sunset.
The sky was aflame and there was the clearest, strongest rainbow I've seen for years!

Got power back around mid-day Tuesday, but out on the local drag about a mile away there are still businesses without power on Thursday morning. You’d think they would be the first to be restored. Still about 100,000 with out power in the DC metro area. Wind knocked trees and trees knocked not just power lines, but power poles as well. They even have a name for this type of storm a Derecho. Learn more than you will ever want to know here.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...kwKW_blog.htmlWe know a number of facts about the June 29 derecho now. As many as 5 million lost power from near Chicago to the East Coast, at least 22 were killed, and it caused a yet uncounted millions or billions in damage. Yet, as of 24 hours prior and even the morning of, very little in the way of mass indication that it was coming.
While the United States moves toward becoming a weather ready nation, how could something like this happen with half a day or less of warning? Is it destined to happen again?
The story starts with a somewhat atypical weather pattern for this area, but one known to produce large-scale severe weather events from the Plains to the East Coast. Possibly the most important part of the pattern is a jet stream flow nearby, often traveling around the north end a big ridge of high pressure producing significant heat.
The “ring of fire,” where these air masses clash, is a well known location of summertime thunderstorms.

But, what made this event special all the way to the East Coast, and were any early clues ignored or overlooked?

Glad you have the power back Count. I love the phrase 'weather ready nation' in the link above. I think the closest I have seen to that is Wimbledon this week. Ballboys and girls on the ready to pull across the tarpaulin and a sliding roof if things get really bad. Umpire making the calls.
Howdy from New Hampshire.
Hot as hell and humidity that kills.
We had an excellent storm last night - forked lightning during the 4th July fireworks, which was really something.
