Anyone else got an opinion on how early this behaviour usually takes place?
After the mildest February I can ever remember ( 12°c for the best part of a week was positively warm by our standards) it's now back to strong cold winds and biting rain.

This year the flowering on the trees started earlier than ever with a cherry tree in bloom on the 5th February and hawthorn or blackthorn in bloom all along the ditches by mid February.

A very pleasant 85F and low humidity here on east coast US today......
    5. Weather
The heat is on out West, where it's so hot that American Airlines has canceled about 50 flights in and out of Phoenix as the temperature there hit 118 degrees. Hotter air means planes need more speed (and more runway) to take off. Las Vegas may see its highest temperature ever recorded, while temperatures today in Phoenix (119 degrees) and Death Valley, California (127 degrees) will be scorching, as well. If that's not enough molten misery, wildfires are burning across California, which is also dealing with buckling roads and power outages caused by the increased use of air conditioners.

Update on Hurricane Harvey that I referenced here last week.

While the associated winds were nothing out of the ordinary for a hurricane, not so with the rainfall, (because it was slow moving). Between noon Friday, and noon Tuesday some locations in the Houston Metropolitan Area (10,000sqm, 6.5M people) received more than 50 inches of rain. About 11 trillion gallons fell on the entire area. If all of that had been concentrated into the Houston downtown area about 2 miles x 2 miles, it would also have been 2 miles high.

It's expected that in excess of 500,000 cars will be written off from flooding costing $16B+

Irma's sustained winds are now up to 185mph, the highest ever recorded in the Atlantic, expected to drop as it approaches the islands. Jose, gathering steam is a couple of days behind.
Also being picked up by seismology instruments because it is shaking so many trees to their roots on the islands.

With Irma set to hit Florida in less than 24 hours, 5.6M are under mandatory evacuation orders from coastal areas. High rise waterfront condos turned off their air conditioning mid week in an attempt to force people out.

On the Islands of Anguilla and Barbuda which took a direct hit, 90% of the buildings were either destroyed or damaged by Irma, and now Jose which is about to hit them has been upgraded to category 4.
