Default Packed Public Meeting begins Socialist Party election campaign in Limerick

A packed public meeting last night in Limerick heard Cian Prenderville (Limerick Socialist Party candidate) and Joe Higgins MEP outline the plans of the establishment to force working class people pay for a crisis they didn't create and called for the building of a left alternative to the austerity programme of the establishment parties. Those attending the meeting were clearly angry at the plans of the government and welcomed the decision of the Socialist Party to stand in the general election in Limerick. A substantial some of money was collected to assist funding the campaign, several people joined the Socialist Party after the meeting and a large number of people volunteered to help with the campaign.

I guess it must have been the Bye-Election. I would have been wondering, given the opportunity that it is giving to put forward policy and programme, if there would be a left candidate.

The Socialist Party will not be running a candidate in the by-election. i don't know about any other left organisations.

Members of the Militant Tendency did run as LP candidates during the 1980's in Donegal North East - but the Socialist Party has not been in a position to run in the constituency in recent times.

I think this is a great shame. Effectively, there will be no socialist voice heard in this crucial bye election.

There was enough advance notice that this was a probability. We collectively dropped the ball.

The WP did have a councillor in that area for many years.

No, I'm not a member of any party. I think it was an opportunity to show a left alternative to the uniform approach of the Dail parties, missed.

Yeah I agree. There's often cynical talk towards the Socialist Party, "why bother getting elected if you refuse completely to take part in a government". Democracy and parliament is more than just government and in the broader context of the GE some guys like Higgins getting elected offers a chance however small of introducing some much needed counter-arguement obviously.

Some Shinners view themselves as left-socialists
