Louise Minihan (29) from Chapelizod in Dublin said her actions were a “legitimate form of political protest” and that she had “no intention” of paying the fine.

Ms Harney gave evidence that she estimated that between €600 and €800 worth of damage had been caused to her clothes.

I have to say, Harney did deserve to be protested against (and E1500 fine is a bit steep). However, gloss paint is toxic and would have done serious damage if it had hit an eye.

Louise Minihan could have made exactly the same point, in a non-toxic manner, with several pints of Heinz tomato ketchup (or, indeed, cochineal). I doubt that would have cost her E1500/jail and would have made exactly the same point.

Note to anyone planning a similar stunt on our next esteemed Min for health, who will no doubt be equally popular by this time next year........
