Michael Dwyers family want a UN enquiry.

I hope any enquiry explains how he and a number of others were recruited in Ireland to work in a heavily armed gang who allegedly planted at least one bomb (at the house of a Cardinal, no less).

    http://www.politics.ie/forum/foreign...mb-attack.html

A report in La Prensa says that Tadic, one of the Rosza Flores group in prison in La Paz, has said that Mike Dwyer, along with RF himself, planted the bomb at the Cardinal's house in Santa Cruz.

The statement of the arrested Mario Tadic, says the prosecutor Marcelo Soza, said people who carried out the attack on the house of Cardinal Terrazas July were Eduardo Rózsa Flores and Michael Martin Dwyer.

"In a paragraph he indicates that the day the device that exploded at the home of Cardinal, Eduardo and Mike arrived at about the one o'clock and boasted about what was done. He pulled it and now we'll see what happens. Mike was a mix of panic and joy. "

The safety fuse and the explosive used in the attack have the same characteristics as those found at the booth level ( in the exhibition fair ground).
Villa Ignacio recalled a comment by Rózsa, laughing: "What a pity that it does not kill the litle priest."

The photo appears to show Mike Dwyer working with Flores at the exhibition ground.

The report in La Prensa also states that evidence has been given by a number of witnesses to the effect that some group members were recruited via the internet, and that Marinkovic, Ruben Costas and other figures from the Santa Cruz facist right, along with Hugo Acha of the US "Human Rights Foundation" (who funded the RF group) were the group running the conspiracy. The aim, according to La Prensa, was to set up a Santa Cruz militia.

A judicial hearing has been delayed due to a challenge from defence council, who want it to take place in Santa Cruz rather than La Paz.

If the evidence quoted proves to be correct, Dwyer was involved as a minor player in a push by right wing business interests and facist groups, backed by US funding and support, attempting to overthrow a legitimate democracy and replace it with a US-friendly neo-liberal regime.

Journalism hits a new low in the Irish Times.

This is published as fact and not qualified in any way in an article by Elaine Edwards today:

Mr Dwyer (24), Ballinderry, Co Tipperary, had gone to Bolivia to train in the security business and he took up work in personal security while there.

    Of some parallel interest:

Hugo Chávez, the Venezuelan president, is claiming a US citizen has been arrested and interrogated on suspicions he is a mercenary involved in a conspiracy against the government.

Chávez, who faces an election on 7 October, suggested the man is part of a plot to destabilise the country if he is re-elected.

Chávez said the Hispanic man was detained on 4 August while crossing into Venezuela from Colombia. The president said the man was carrying a US passport with entrance and exit stamps from countries including Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya as well as a notebook containing geographical co-ordinates.

The man's identity was not released. Chávez did not say where he was being interrogated.

An official from the US embassy in Caracas did not answer repeated telephone calls seeking comment on Chávez's announcement.

    None.

It was an interview his mother and to be fair to her she's no different to any other parent who wants to think the best of their child.

Documentary tomorrow night on Al Jazeera English, 10.30pm, about the whole Dwyer/Flores/Revesz episode, entitled 'Bolivian Escapade' - apparently going to look into the Szekler Legion, the Corrib connection, as well as the lead-up to the April 2009 firefight. Might be worth a look for us anoraks who have been following this for the last 4 years.

Thanks for the tip off. I'll certainly take a look. It was an education, following those extraordinary events, and the background to them both in Bolivia and in Ireland.

Thanks. Wondered why it was not being flagged for 10.30.

just getting rolling news on t'internet.

    says

    http://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/...022542771.html

People & Power can be seen each week at the following times GMT: Wednesday: 2230; Thursday: 0930; Friday: 0330; Saturday: 1630; Sunday: 2230; Monday: 0930.

    and the blurb

In the early hours of April 16, 2009, a heavily armed special forces unit of the Bolivian police crept into a downtown hotel in the eastern city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. They made their way to two upstairs rooms and burst in. Within minutes, three European guests had been shot and killed.

When news of the raid broke, the Bolivian authorities said little - except that the dead men had been plotting to kill Bolivia’s left-wing president, Evo Morales, and had fiercely resisted arrest.

Two other Europeans survived the raid on the Hotel de las Americas and were taken away to the capital La Paz for interrogation.

So who were these mysterious Europeans? How did they come to be in Santa Cruz? And were they really - as the Bolivian authorities alleged - involved in a conspiracy to destabilise the South American country and assassinate its head of state? Or were they, as others have since suggested, the hapless victims of a bitter power struggle between autonomy activists in one of Bolivia’s most prosperous regions and the first indigenous president in the country’s history.

Four years later, the disturbing answers behind this extraordinary episode are beginning to emerge. As filmmaker Risteard O' Domhnaill reveals in this multi-faceted investigation for People & Power, it is a story with an unusual cast and the most unlikely origins.

Tracing the alleged conspirators back to Hungary, Romania and the Republic of Ireland, he picks his way through a murky world of international intrigue, freelance security guards, Bolivia’s complex politics, the Balkans war, and the naive ambition of at least one young man in search of adventure.

Along the way he meets some of the families of those who died - still struggling to understand exactly why their relatives were killed before they had a chance to defend themselves in a court of law - and finds out how and why the men’s self-appointed leader, a charismatic Bolivian-born Hungarian journalist, had managed to entice them to another continent thousands of miles from home.

Part mystery story, part morality tale, part human tragedy, Bolivian Escapade sheds fresh light on a controversy that still divides the country to this day.

Sounds good - the film of the thread.

The two scenarios sketched are not really contradictory - trying to split Bolivia up (autonomy activism) was of course destabilising.
I'll be interested to see if they show these guys involvement in a "pseudo gang" bombing at a Cardinal's house. Also, the funding of the operation by a named US agent.
