Again, dont underestimate peoples ability to decide what is necessary and best for themselves and their Society. I would say peoples biggest Issue with Taxation(I know its mine!) is not how much they Pay, but how it is Spent. And our government has not been spending our money well in the last Decade. So is the answer to slash Taxation or reform the system that collects and spends that money?

Considering how reliant we are on all Tax revenue right now to keep the Lights on, I cant believe any Petition to merely abolish or reduce existing Tax would be successful.
Regarding new Taxes, it depends on what is being proposed. What if a tax was to be levied, for those who can afford it, on Broadband connections to fund a much-needed upgrade of Ye-Olde Copper pipe system that passes for our Telecommunications network? I would support it depended that the Bill in question specified things like :
- The money collected would only be used for Infrastructure spending
- It would only be collected for as long as was necessary.
- The money would be spent on a Publicly owned system and not bumping up Eircoms Balance sheet at our expense.
Whats Crucial is how the money is spent and peoples confidence in that. A better use of the Petition system would be a Bill or Bills aimed at increasing Transparency in Govt, allowing us to see where that money is being spent, who is being awarded contracts and why and of course making the relevant TD or Minster Accountable for Failures in this new Tax Bill.
Every time, I mean Every Time, a crisis hits a Nation, Governments will almost immeadiately go after their own people. They will attempt to cut the services so many of them rely on for a meaningful Quality of Life or even just to stay alive. As they do so, they conveniently leave themselves out of any Cuts to be faced. Along with their friends and supporters. We can see this happening here. Hospital Wards are being closed across the Land while the Quango Behemoth, where all Govt accountability was sub-contracted to, escapes scrutiny. And yet this Cancer costs us in excess of €10 Billion a year. THIS is where Peoples Ideas need to hit home. Theres no point in shaving the Tax take. Our leaders have demonstrated that when that happens, they pass the misery onto us. We need to demand more Transparency and more Accountability as to where that money is being spent.
The first robot president won by exactly one vote. Ah, yes! John Quincy Adding Machine. He struck a chord with the voters when he pledged not to go on a killing spree. But, like most politicians he promised more than he could deliver.
