Yep, lot of vested interests in the Mater's selection.
These people don't give a damn about children's welfare, they could give a ****** about the parents; they just want to see their investments pay off.

THE BOARD of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin has given its full support for the development of the national children’s hospital on the campus of St James’s Hospital, Dublin.

In a fresh twist in the planning controversy, Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin, who chairs the Crumlin hospital board, said it was fully convinced that developing the children’s facility along with a future maternity hospital at St James’s south city campus represented the best option for the care of children and the long-term interest of paediatrics.

This site is far more appropriate as the new site for the children's hospital. The area is not at risk of overdevelopment, it does not have accessibility issues either. I've had cause to use St. James' hospital over the years, it's a good hospital.

A new plan

A MASSIVE new €1.2bn medical hub with a national children's hospital and a relocated Beaumont Hospital at its core is being seriously considered by Health Minister James Reilly.

The Irish Independent has learned the project -- mooted for a greenfield site near Dublin Airport -- is being promoted as a solution to the children's hospital headache and as a wider stimulus measure.

The site, around the Belcamp area at the end of the M50, is being floated as a strong possibility as part of a larger health, business and education campus.

The plan is also understood to have been discussed with US and Arab investors, as well as Chinese officials during February's visit to Ireland by Vice President Xi Jinping.

It is envisaged these funding sources -- with possible input from a government-backed stimulus plan -- would provide the money, which would then be paid back over a set period of around 20 years.

A NATIONAL children’s hospital at the Phoenix Park racecourse would be €210 million cheaper than the plan for the Mater site, developers have said.

Property development company Flynn and O’Flaherty has offered eight acres at the racecourse in Dublin to the State for the planned national children’s hospital.

One of the advantages of the site was that it was zoned for development and there was previous planning permission for a nine-storey development, he said. It could be delivered by 2016. There would also be ample space for car parking, and current infrastructure included a train station.

There appears to be free flowing traffic as well as sufficient area to house patient records, instead of farming them out to some yellow pack u-store, which I believe was in the original proposal.

St. Vincent's University Hospital is beside the North/ South railway line and just off the N11 which joins it to the M50 making access from anywhere in the country a lot easier than to the Mather Hospital.

Adjoining St. Vincent's is the huge 18 hole Elm Park golf club. In fact the land the Hospital now occupies was bought by the Sisters of Charity from the golf club in 1933 to found the hospital.

Has the possibility of siting the Children's hospital where the Elm park golf course now is been given any consideration?

Turns out Gilmore doesn't exactly trust Reilly. Can't say I blame him. Gilmore will be politicking too of course and might be making sure a Labour colleague is rewarded for Labour's loyalty shown towards Reilly

TANAISTE Eamon Gilmore is carrying out his own research on children's hospital locations in a sign of a breakdown of trust in Health Minister James Reilly.

The behind-the-scenes moves illustrate just how poor the working relationship is between Dr Reilly and the Labour Party.

"Based on recent events, you can't say it's surprising," a senior government source said.

"Gilmore's advisers are meeting all the different shortlisted hospitals. He is trying to inform himself. Kenny is happy to decide whatever Reilly recommends. His natural default position is to back the minister. Gilmore often second-guesses," a minister said.

"It is a big decision and . . . it's good to hear directly from those involved. There's nothing to it other than that," a government source said.

St James's Hospital is understood to be ahead on tertiary specialist areas, as it has a range of services on site, including blood transfusion, radiological, cardiological and neurological facilities.

"If James's had a 20-acre empty field beside it, it would be there now," a minister said.

Dr Reilly's initially preferred location, a green-field site at Belcamp, fell out of the running because it "did not have anyone to push it seriously".

"It's not a runner for so many different reasons," a minister said.
