Default The State of Israel - Divison and Inequality

Up to the end of the 1960s Israel was one of the world's most equal states.

That now has been reversed and after the US, Israel is the most unequal state in the world. Child poverty is common and 18 families control approximately 60% of the wealth.

Occupation, illegal settlements and war, along with a neoliberal economy at home, have not been good for the majority of the population in Israel.

Netanyahu has said that Israel "needs to control all of the territory" and to "live forever by the sword".

The US has reduced USAID for Palestinians and boosted military funding to Israel this year by a billion.

While the focus is on Syria and Iraq, a new phase of aggression against Arabs in Israel and against the Palestinian territories has been ramped up and Gaza has not been allowed to rebuild after the last Israeli military operation.

Does anyone have an overview on why, at this stage, the Israeli regime is heading down this path ?

"Does anyone have an overview on why, at this stage, the Israeli regime is heading down this path ?"

In my view is not possible to objectively consider and answer this question without considering the issue of resurgent anti-semitism in Europe. Of course, Netanyahu is disgracefully exploiting that issue, but the fact that Netanyahu is being a yahoo, as per usual, does not mean that it does not exist.

In relation to the recent 'lone wolf' -type violence on both sides, an interesting essay here:

Netanyahu uses anti-semitism as a recruiting tool for Jewish immigration. Even the Charlie Hebdo attack, which was not anti-semitic, was used in that way. I think there less anti-semitism in Europe than there is anti-Moslem sentiment. I don't really see the connection between Netanyahu flattening Gaza and racist incidents (and the growth of antisemitic / racist parties ) in Europe.

    Agreed 100%.

The Hebdo attack was not anti-semitic per se, but the attack on the kosher baker that occured a day or so afterwards in Paris undoubtedly was. Rabbis and Jewish organisations around Europe nevertheless condemned both the attacks and Netanyahu's opportunistic exploitation of those attacks - while also expressing concerns about the rising tide of anti-semitism that they personally have experienced and been witness to.

Inclined to agree - but there are also much fewer Jewish citizens in Europe than there are Moslem citizens.

Israel by area is a comparatively small spot of land - smaller than a province and a half of Ireland. If attacks on Jewish citizens in Europe are seen as increasing (and objective reports seem to indicate that they are, without disputing your point that Islamophobia is also a huge issue in Europe) then the motivation for European Jewish citizens to move to Israel increases - and that in turn feeds into Netanyahu's demands to occupy more space for Israel.

The corollary to Netanyahu is people like George Galloway that like to associate themselves with the Palestinian movement, with his talk of a greater Palestine 'from sea to sea'. What are these words intended to mean? They mean, of course, that Galloway wants Jewish people to be scared, just as Netanyahu wants Arab citizens in Israel to be scared. In my view, both are sectarian demagogues, and their ideologies should be firmly rejected.
