Default Australian PM stands down. Replaced by deputy PM who will be first female PM

    Just reported on CNBC.

There was to be a vote but the PM stood down as he had no chance of winning.

New PM is "from the Left"

    Some background here

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is reportedly set to be toppled by his deputy, Julia Gillard, in a leadership ballot today, as the government desperately seeks to avoid election defeat later this year.

Gillard would become Australia's first woman prime minister if successful at the vote set for 11.00am NZT, but she is expected to present more of a change of leadership style than substance, with no major policy reversals anticipated.

Though Gillard is unlikely to scrap major government policies, investors hope she will adopt a more conciliatory stance on the most controversial one, a proposed 40% mining tax which has angered miners and rattled voters.

This echoes a similar case here in New Zealand in 1997, when Jenny Shipley (National) rolled her boss Jim Bolger .
She was hailed as the first female Prime Minster of New Zealand .
Critics pointed out that Shipley was not the first elected female PM .
That came about two years later in the 1999 when Helen Clark (Labour) was elected to the post of Prime Minister of New Zealand .

I wonder how long Julia Gillard will stay in the seat .

BBC News: Australia has its first female PM.

I predict their economy will crash... Into the back of another economy.

    CIA unaware Gillard is PM
The United States' Central Intelligence Agency is still unaware that Australia has a female prime minister.
Four days after Labor's factional warlords forced Kevin Rudd to resign, the CIA is still behind with the news.
