    Default Eating Nettles

Yep, thats right, I eat stinging nettles. I found out they were edible a few weeks ago (thanks internet) and have been eating them nearly every day since then, with no ill effects. I boil them for a few minutes and serve them as a vegetable with meat. Nettles taste similar to spinach, except sweeter. The juice from the boiling is also sweet and I drink that for full vitamin absorption.

Nettles grow prolifically in Ireland, from April onwards, so theyre extremely easy to source. Theyre also easy to identify. Its best to harvest them with gloves on to avoid stings. I usually use a scissors to harvest the top of the plant where the leaves are youngest. Ive gotten my food bill down a bit by boiling a pot of nettles every night. Lovely!

Can be used for a home made brew as well. Must try it some time.

A Polish friend showed me how to steam them and add a small bit of cream.
Nice puréed too - but only the tips.

Nice little nettle soup recipe here - but I've never tried it. You need garlic, potatoes, olive oil and some stock.

There used to be a tradition in country places of having nettle soup in May. It was reckoned to be good for the blood. I don't know about that but it is lovely.

I have forwarded this to the Dept. of Finance marked Urgent Attention of Minister Lenihan. I expect that you will receive a grateful acknowledgement in the upcoming budget which will include a provision banning the importation of all non native fruit and vegetables.
