About a year ago I was driving down Parkgate St. in my taxi, when two adult figures dressed in burkas tried to flag me down. I dont know if they were men or women though they had a child in a buggy with them, so maybe they were really women, and maybe it was the strange dress code of Islamic extremism that they were following. Who knows? Men...Women.....a shrouded figure is a shrouded figure, I do'nt stop for them. If that is discrimination well at least I practice equal opportunity discrimination, I won't stop if you are wearing the traditional Irish balaclava either.

And turn in repentance to Allah together, O you the faithful, in order that you are successful"

Qur'an Sura Nur Chapter: The Light. Verse 31

The words 'face ' and 'faces' do not feature in that Qur'an quote from TotalMayhem.
So , TotalMayhem has yet to back up his claim that the Koran dictates that the women of Islam must hide their faces .

Notice how TotalMayhem prattels on about the covering of hair .
This topic is not about hair , covered or otherwise , not that that matters to TotalMayhem .

Its state interference in the civil rights of an individual. No one has the right to tell me what to wear or not what to wear no matter where I am. The women have a right to choose if they wish to obey a cultural practice and not have cops breathing down their throats. There is also passages in the Quaran which discuss how women and treated and respect should be accorded to them .

fluffybiscuits reread your Koran also check out the Hadiths.
    If you do...investigate Abrogation.
Also keep it in mind when discussing Islam with a Muslim.

From memory...Mohammed became excited looking at one of his daughter in laws and decreed that all she devils should cover up.

I don't think so. The laws of a country should not be accomodating to religious laws- either catholic, jewish or muslim.

If anyone is having difficulty in adapting to the customs of a host country then that is a challenge for them. Not the host country.

Do I go to a moslem country and stroll in to look at a mosque with muddy boots on? And simply inform anyone who complains that it is not the custom to remove shoes in a place of worship in my culture?

I wouldn't be surprised. It seems one of the few places where one is expected to show courtesy to people who move to the region and demand that their culture be installed around them in the host country.

To be honest I would prefer at this stage to openly say to people when they move to a European country by all means honour your own culture in your community and there's no problem with exercising your customs amond your family and other people who share your cultural background but attempts to install cultural rules within the laws of a host country will be met with eviction.

It is up to me to adapt to a host society if I move there. The same rules should pertain to other cultures moving to Europe.

That isn't racism. That is common sense.

Not that that has anything to do with the topic of this thread.

This is about a new law in France , one aimed at a specific group of people who have been resident in the country for quite some time .

Not the same thing at all

We claim we are very accommodating but what right have we to tell them not to wear it? If we create a cloud of mystery over the whole burque it just reinforces peoples thinking that its some sort of tool of oppression (which it can be) rather than a cultural norm. The more we normalise something the more that people become to accept it. Custom and practice Captain!

Just to throw this out there in response to a new govt. Socialists should adopt a bicultural model where new communities can intergrate and also keep their own customs once it does not impinge on someone elses rights. The burqa itself only affects the wearer. Freedom of speech as some of you are advocates of should also be extended to freedom to wear what is wanted. If the govt feels it is a tool of oppression put the necessary measures in place to accommodate people to report it .
